Mariana Victoria of Spain, Queen Consort of Portugal
Mariana Victoria of Bourbon and Farnese (1718-1781) was the eldest daughter of Philip V of Spain, the first Bourbon king of Spain and his second wife Elisabeth Farnese.
When she was just three years old she was engaged to the eleven year old king of France, Luis XV. She was sent to France to receive her education in the French court until she would be old enough to get married. Even though she was popular at court and the Regent's mother adored her, the marriage never took place (Luis was advised to not wait for her to grow up and just marry someone else to secure an heir). So after four years, she was sent back to Spain, which was seen as a great offense.
In 1729 she married a different king to be: Joseph, the heir of the Portuguese crown. Although they had close relationship (they enjoyed hunting as well as music and both were passionately religious), her husband maintained various mistresses much to the dislike of strong-willed Mariana. During her marriage, Mariana gave birth to eight children, but only four daughters survived infancy.
At the death of her father-in-law, King John V in 1750, her husband became the ruler of the Portuguese Empire as Joseph I.
After he had a series of stokes, Mariana was created Regent of Portugal in her husband's name in 1776 until her husband's death 1777. Subsequently, their eldest daughter became the first queen regnant as Maria I. Throughout her daughter's reign she used to exert much influence on her daughter, who would often ask her mother's advice on most matters of state.
Mariana Victoria died at the Real Barraca de Ajuda in 1781. She was buried at the Church of Saint Francis of Paola in Lisbon.
The portrait at the top was painted by Domenico Maria Sani and can be found at the Royal Palace of Caserta, Italy.
