I am and never was annoyed at the "are we really independent?" types of posts and I still don't get the rage against them. Because those posts are almost always highlighting some severe systemic issues or the other. When women get killed for their "honour" by their own brothers and fathers and Dalit men are murdered for taking out a marriage procession and Muslims are lynched to death for eating beef, a day like Independence Day does make you ponder about the meaning of "independence" and who in this country is truly free.

Both the public servants and the Indian public seem to have forgotten that respect is never granted or owed. It is earned. Instead of saying how dare some teenagers cuss out the PM or how dare a whole batch of freshly graduated law students from a premiere law institute refuse to be felicitated by the Chief Justice of India, we need to be asking what did the PM and the CJI do in the first place to make the general public lose faith in them and become this disillusioned.
