The Breadmaker (A Story for Rue)
Dear Jack and Julie,
I deeply regret the way things worked out in the past. It’s been a long and boring decade without you both in my life. I have not made any new friends since. There have been more rough patches than not because of what went down that winter. The Incident has certainly played a part on where my life has turned. It is true that warm bread is something we all could have enjoyed. I wish we could have found a more sensible solution such as a joint ownership plan with alternating weeks. We lived next door. It wouldn’t have been that hard. Maybe we could have even gone in and split the cost of a second machine. She left me last year. Things got bad, real bad. The bread wasn’t enough to make things right. I’m not going to get into what happened but I will say that what we did to you was wrong. I’ve come to turns with my part in what happened and I need to make amends so that I may move on with my life. The bread machine belongs here, in this entryway, right where we found it all those years ago. It’s your story now, as it should have been then. Enjoy a cracked wheat on my behalf. -Your Friend
