Okay, so the whole thing was Thomathy's brain-child. He met Patton, who had this weird affinity for animals, and was like "Well we better take this show on the road!" And he was kind of being shunned in his hometown for being openly gay anyway, so he might as well leave. Joan and Talyn were his best friends from childhood in this au, and they decided to join the adventure!
From there, Remy joined, then Emile, then Logan, Roman and Remus, and finally Dmitry and Virgil, who have only just immigrated to America from Russia and are looking for work when they find a poster for the circus and realize that, as classically trained dancers and gymnasts, they can probably find work there.
