The future.

Josh and I spent a great amount of time talking about our future together with The Common Men.

I really do not wish to get into details, but it is amazing how in-tune he and I are with each other about where we want to go musically.

I'm excited. He's excited. Sucks we have to wait for a few more months to get the wheels in motion. Will be worth the wait... I think ;)

April's 2 song challenge!

I have two ideas that will become songs!

"Flights" an interesting number that mixes elements of 6/4 and 4/4

"Combustion" definitely more Common Men in flavor but with more atmospheric and fuzzy guitar work.

The challenge is to write record and produce these two songs in one month. I have them written, just need to schedule time to record!

The Common Men - Let It Burn

With their new album Let It Burn, Sacramento's The Common Men firmly establish themselves among the leaders of the Post-Punk scene in Central and Northern California. Kevin Ian leads the way on guitar, using what sounds like a million pedals and effects to create an atmospheric and urgent sound. Kim Aparicio, one of the best local drummers around, provides more than just a back beat. She provides fills that are sometimes odd and definitely original. Joshua rounds out the trio on bass, with a great sense when to provide a steady background, and when to let loose. This album has many killer songs on it. Vital Signs is just downright catchy (with some great and unique bass playing near the end of the song). Hanged Men would fit in well with some of Devo's best. Panic is another catchy song, with Kevin's low vocals fitting the music and lyrics perfectly. Reft slows things down, sounding spooky and sad at the same time. Wendigo, at 8:49, is the highlight of the record. It is an epic song with a gorgeous slow middle section that slowly builds up into a rocking ending. The Headshrinker's Ritual ends the record. It starts with a unique drumming style that should be patented by Kim. There really is no other drummer that sounds like her. The guitar effects sound like a thunderstorm brooding, with the bass having a fuzzy and distorted sound to back it up. The Common Men have arrived. Along with The Trims, this trio is leading a Post Punk revival in the local music scene. The Common Men have musical integrity, and they sound like they make music first and foremost for themselves (which is how it should be). Fans are welcome to join the ride if they wish. They are a strange band. And strange bands are often the best bands who develop the most dedicated and loyal fan base. This album should expand that loyal fan base even further.
