The Dears - Life is Beautiful!
The Dears x Thanya Iyer appreciation post
Got a last minute ticket to the Dears courtesy of Thanya Iyer who was opening. My two fave Montreal bands. It's amazing how music can transport us, The Dears played like they did when I saw them in high school. Now I feel young even though I should feel old lol.
Thanya was stunning and had a beautiful tune about Gaza. I honestly like The Dears better than Arcade Fire who was the other big sophisticated hubby and wife indie band from Montreal at the time. And Murray's tune about being black in the scene opened my eyes. I like them better than the Smiths who they get constantly compared to mainly off the singing.
Bonus - unreleased ish collab I did with Thanya
3/2/25.
"Montreal, Canada-based indie band who make charming, pristine chamber pop."
That is the one sentence at the top of Stars' AllMusic page. An introduction like that brings to mind other bands like The Heavy Blinkers, The Dears or Murray A. Lightburn. And, Murray Lightburn does get vocal credits on "Set Yourself On Fire", which got a 20th anniversary reissue last year. Before I did any digging, I immediately thought of The Delgados (probably has something to do with the vocal interplay).
The band has been active for over 20 years, most recently releasing an album in 2022, so clearly, there's a lot of listening for me to do. This was released (and re-released) by Arts & Crafts.

Miss Nick Lightbearer’s Soothing Voice?
Check out Nick Lightbearer’s singer: Murray Lightburn in The Dears - Too Many Wrongs or in his solo project: Murray A. Lightburn - Reaching Out For Love and many more!
god the way the chorus is mixed on the second he sings it around time around 3:30 fucks me up so bad. i think they layered his voice cracking over top of him still singing the note and it gives such a perfect effect to catch you off guard.
the first like dozen times i listened to this song i really thought he was actually cracking his voice on demand it wasnt until i started writing out this post and listening to it more closely i realized it was mixed like that with a second voice. soo cool i love this album i used to not like it except the first song (which is one of my favourite songs ever) but its really really grown on me as a whole i think its funny that he sounds like morrisey
Well I bought my ticket back on 20th Dec 2019 & after lots of rescheduling The Dears arrived in town last night with a set of their classics.
