Balloon are a Haarlem, Netherlands, who play music that combines soul, folk and pop. "There Is Love" was the first song that I heard and I immediately thought of The Velvet Underground combined with an almost Aaron Frazer-esque melody.

But other songs sound a bit like John Southworth, Murray Lightburn or Ed Askew. There's a lot of influence name-dropping in the Bandcamp liner notes for this release (also in the song "Underneath My Bed"!). I love the inclusion of Smokey Robinson, Tom Verlaine, and Subway Sect.

This was an enjoyable listen from start to finish. I repeat listened to this all morning. Coffee, magazine and Balloon "Gas 'n' Air" made a perfect start to my day. This release comes 30 years after their debut LP "Gravity". That early and original incarnation of Balloon had a definite Pale Lights vibe (years before there was such a band as Pale Lights).

Well I bought my ticket back on 20th Dec 2019 & after lots of rescheduling The Dears arrived in town last night with a set of their classics.

The Dears - To Hold & Have

Chris Cohen (Richmond, California) has returned to the Bay Area and settled into a life of producing, playing and making music. There's probably more time spent producing and playing. He's been a part of recent releases from Weyes Blood and Kurt Vile.

Now comes his third full length LP - this one for Sub Pop offshoot Hardly Art. "Damage" is the only song currently available and it definitely sounds like Cohen - his voice is unmistakable as is the clear and upfront bass. This song has a jazzy feel that recalls the sounds of Murray Lightburn. And while he doesn't appear to be making any new music, J Fernandez still serves as a touchstone.

I knew this release was coming up, so not only have I been listening to Cohen's previous solo work, but I've been listening to The Curtains and his work with Deerhoof.

“Shooting Stars” from Sometimes Songs has really brightened my mood.  Not much was good about the pandemic, but maybe we can take solace in the fact that musical projects like this created such amazing music that might not have ever been made without a devastatingly long lockdown.  This reminds me of a cross between Murray Lightburn, Pat Boone, Motown, and Mega Bog (new album coming out). 

This is released by Wonderfulsound, a London, UK based label.  They have a singles club, which this is part of.  While you’re looking at the offerings of this label, be sure to check out Luca Nieri “Etrurian Shades” which reminds me of the early work of Maston.
