Anything can be a truth if enough people believe it to be one. In Mel's case, if they believe it, it's good enough, even if no one else might feel inclined to. What unnecessary things could they have possibly done? Everything he does is a means to survival.

And everything he does outside of that is enjoying the fruits of their labours that keep them going. It's maths, honestly.

He reaches over to topple a bowl of nuts over and gently place it face down next to its spilled contents.

"Everything that is meaningful is necessary. And there is meaning in everything. If only you believe," they clap twice, hesitate, how many times did Peter Pan ask one to for Tinkerbell?

"Even a cold hard lie can be meaningful and necessary. Wouldn't you agree?"

"A true act of good will always spark another. Wouldn't you agree?"

The wallet sits between them. Half abandoned or half conquered, depending entirely on whether or not they can get a concession or a rejection out of the hopefully future owner of the wallet. The trick with people is that they're often much more inclined to do bad things if they think they're doing good things.

"We could put it back where we found it, sure. But think about it. What if someone else picks it up. Someone who's a truly, truly despicable person. Unlike you. And they use the money or the cards for something truly, truly bad. What then? Wouldn't it be better it ends up in good hands? Yours, for example?"
