Anything can be a truth if enough people believe it to be one. In Mel's case, if they believe it, it's good enough, even if no one else might feel inclined to. What unnecessary things could they have possibly done? Everything he does is a means to survival.
And everything he does outside of that is enjoying the fruits of their labours that keep them going. It's maths, honestly.
He reaches over to topple a bowl of nuts over and gently place it face down next to its spilled contents.
"Everything that is meaningful is necessary. And there is meaning in everything. If only you believe," they clap twice, hesitate, how many times did Peter Pan ask one to for Tinkerbell?
"Even a cold hard lie can be meaningful and necessary. Wouldn't you agree?"
