Song Review: The Devil Makes Three - “Mr. Midnight”

The Devil Makes Three’s knack for making live performances sound as clean as their stripped-back studio recordings is in stark relief on “Mr. Midnight” as recorded outdoors in Colorado and released as a standalone video.

Two guitars, two voices, bass and fiddle are all that’s needed to create a live version that retains its studio counterpart’s melody and harmony while opening up the arrangement and reining in the tempo to create a different setting for the familiar chorus:

Now you can’t go out, can’t go home, even in a crowd you feel all alone/find yourself hiding from the light/you need that money, you got no shame, just a pawn running in his game/with Mr. Midnight, it’s always the same, Pete Bernhard and MorganEve Swain sing in a blend just unfinished enough that their individual voices easily discernible.

Sonic patina such as this only enhances the music, making TDM3’s live performances as thrilling as their DIY-flavored studio recordings.
