The Devil Makes Three - "The Bullet"
Song Review(s): The Devil Makes Three - “Wheels” and “I’m a Woman”
Augmented by friends who give their trio full-band instrumentation, the Devil Makes Three mix an original with a cover on their latest two-sided single.
And it’s the B-side, a cover of Peggy Lee’s Leiber and Stoller-written “I’m a Woman,” with bassist Lucia Turino on lead vocals, that carries the day.
On it, Turino and guitarists Cooper McBean and Pete Bernhard are joined by drummer Stefan Amidon and fiddler Kellen Wenrich (mandolinist Pete Frostic plays the A-Side, “Wheels”) to create a good-time celebration of womanhood.
If you come to me sickly, you know I'm gonna make you well/if you come to me all hexed up, you know I'm gonna break the spell/if you come to me hungry, you know I'm gonna fill you full of grits/if it's lovin' you're likin’, I'll kiss you and give you the shiverin' fits/'cause I'm a woman/w-whoa-oh-m-a-n
Turino and Wenrich infuse the track with an orneriness that’s irresistible and makes “Wheels” - a road song written and sung by McBean that’s been done 1,000 times before - seem like a pointless detour.
