Day Twenty-Nine: Exploring the 'Hood
If someone were to ask me about my first memories of NYC, I would have to say Tuesday nights at Slane Public House in Greenwich Village. I have countless memories at that place, from birthday parties to going away parties to welcome home parties, and all the moments in between. So when my friend Samantha called tonight to tell me the owners of Slane opened a new restaurant just a few blocks from my apartment, I knew tonight's new thing would be to spend some time exploring right in my own neighborhood.
The Ellington, located at 106th and Amsterdam, is that perfect mix of an Irish pub with a New York feel. The restaurant boasts open air and outdoor seating on two of the four walls, with a homey, oak-based bar and warm light fixtures to set the atmosphere. They run a happy hour special until 8pm (love it) and offer delicious, upscale bar food at reasonable prices. For our visit we tried the spinach artichoke dip (yum), the wild mushroom flatbread, the fig and ricotta flatbread, the Ellington burger and the veggie burger. Everything was delicious, and the service was friendly and engaging, just as we've always experienced at Slane.
If you live on the Upper West Side, or you just feel like trying someplace new, I highly recommend this sweet corner spot on Amsterdam and 106th St. Props to Sarah for her warm welcome... we'll be back!
Samantha, Andrea, Patrick and I... happy customers.
