Discussion on the Mind Palace

The Sign of Three, like the Empty Hearse, was largely from Sherlock's POV, instead of John's as usual. So in both episodes, we get a better look into Sherlock's mind palace than we had before.

Both episodes we see how largely visual Sherlock Holmes is. He doesn't rely only on what he's seeing, but also what he's retained, and what he's able to construct for himself.

In TEH, we see Sherlock able to visualize the trains on the underground, the paths they take, even the time it takes for them to get from place to place.

In SOT, we get an even closer look, specifically, a courtroom location for Sherlock to work out a case, and visualize the information that he is reading from online.

We also see something else important in this same courtroom; how the people that have influenced Sherlock factor into his thinking process.

When he thinks of The Woman, she appears in all her battledress's glory; he's conjured up an image of her just by simply mentioning her. Clearly she'd made a rather large impact on our detective.

But while Irene serves as only a distraction ('I'm busy!' Sherlock tells her image, suggesting that perhaps when he is not, he still thinks of her); Mycroft Holmes serves as a means of focusing in, of thinking more clearly.

Sherlock imagines Mycroft Holmes seated above him-as perhaps a judge, presiding over and dictating Sherlock's thoughts and actions. Mycroft asks the questions that Sherlock has the answers to, and it's when he doesn't have the answers that things get interesting. Because Sherlock begins his search for the culprit even though no one's been killed yet. Mycroft's a man of wide fields, the man who says caring is not an advantage, the man who seemingly keeps Sherlock focused on the puzzle, and not the pieces. Mycroft would look through the wide field and discover the culprit, but Sherlock? Sherlock doesn't do that. Sherlock's a different breed of Holmes and a different sort of logician, and we are told that very starkly when John becomes his voice of reason instead of Mycroft.

We'd seen him using John as a mental device before; when studying Lestrade's case 'How I did it by Jack the Ripper' Sherlock hears John's voice, telling him what's wrong with what he's doing, echoes of John telling him to be less of a show off, etc. Not the happiest image of a John Watson we can see, but Sherlock however, thinks differently.

'John Watson, you always put me right.'

Because while mycroft is a man of puzzles and bigger pictures, find the killer and not the victim, John Watson is a man of individuals, the man who will see the people behind the pieces, the man who will save the life instead of solve the crime/the puzzle.

Sherlock's POV in these episodes gives us a glimpse to why the different sides of his mind palace are so important to his work; because they reflect both sides of himself and his life. The unfeeling, puzzle-solving logician who may admit that 'caring is not an advantage', and the caring and feeling side, the one who thinks of the victims and the importance thereof.

It's very telling about Sherlock's persona and how he wants to be perceived, but also along with how the people in his life have changed his perceptions of what he does.

Did anyone else notice

that in Sherlock Season 3 The Empty Herse, V for Vendetta was the theme the bomber was using? November 5 was the date the bomb was set to go off & John says, "remember remember" when they figure it out.
