The Equals - Michael and His Slipper Tree from 'Equals Strike Again' released in 1969. This song is like the telling of a fairy tale that was once shared as a nursery rhyme which the band just translated into a kind of bubblegum pop tune with a great group sung chorus. The Equals were one of those "bargain bin" bands for me, a band whose records I brought cheaply in various second-hand locations. Initially, I had no idea that guitarist Eddy Grant was the same dude behind 1982s 'Electric Avenue'. It took a piece in 1990 or so from a magazine I was reading about the band to make that connection. I was like, "What?" (It was a shock on par with hearing some of David Bowie's earlier musical output like the song 'The Laughing Gnome' except the early work Grant is associated with was good.) Give it a listen. The chorus will dance in your head for days.
