Where is The Finger Eater Ep. 2?
Obviously I get this question a lot. Almost every day!
“It’s been 2 years”, “It’s been 2 years just give up”, etc. is a common comment on Youtube.
I’m honored people even care about an episode 2, so thanks for thinking my thing is interesting! I’m also very thankful that I’m in a spot where my “fan base” continues to grow, rather than disappear slowly, despite my lack of animation uploads.
So anyway, my first and best answer to this question is simply this: I’ve grown to love the characters and world, so the project is growing to something bigger. It’s not just a little internet cartoon to me, it’s a really big part of my life at the moment. I’ve been working on this series since like 2014 and it’s my baby! It’s my BIG THING people know me for, even though it’s not mega popular and neither am I.
And there’s other reasons for the long wait, obviously (money, schedules of collaborators, all the kinda stuff that comes with making a big project, working on other projects), but as far as things that are in my complete control go, my passion for the project is the main reason.
I’m not a studio obviously, but I’m attempting to make this cartoon as “studio quality” as I can. I’m working to make something really special, at my own pace, whenever I can find the time.
Along the way, I’m constantly imagining new details to put in the world of The Finger Eater, and now the world has grown so detailed and JUICY and awesome (if I may say so), that I have this big well to draw from. Every now and then, I commit to taking one of these details from that idea well and I actually put it into motion in this new episode.
So, there’s this solid episode 2 story I’ve written and polished up and am currently animating, but there’s these little abstract and exciting and interesting details I’m adding in between that spices up the episode a bit. It allows some world and character building, while also sometimes adding more mystery to the whole thing?? When things become too ‘explained’ it becomes NOT scary, and I want SCARY, but at the same time I want to give enough detail to make certain things click. I’ve been working on a good balance and it’s mega fun 2 BE HONEST. I work on these parts when I’m really burnt out on doing the main story, and it’s good for my little brain. Sometimes I need to take a break from the monotony of animating one big scene and just work on something else that I can finish relatively quickly. This keeps me working on the project without getting completely drained.
This ALL BEING SAID I’m not just adding new things for the sake of it. I’m only adding what I think truly benefits the story and the tone of the episode. The stuff that accurately conveys what’s in my head and tells the tale of THE FINGA EATA correctly.
In the meantime, I’m making art and music and everyone can snack on that while waiting for dinner.
Tried to keep it short and it came out long. TLDR: Very passionate about this thing and I’m working by myself to make it truly what I want OUT THERE IN THE WORLD!
