Cronenberg was also involved in an opera based on The Fly created by his composer friend Howard Shore (who composed the score for his film). From what I've read it's a combination of the original version and the remake, so the plot follows a Seth Brundle and the story of the 80s film, but set in the 50s. And you can tell based on the design of the opera's Brundlefly:
He's got the coloration and more fly-looking head of the 50s version, with the grotesque body of the Cronenberg film.
Although the in-between stages still adheres more to the Cronenberg one:
And for fun here's the final transformation from the ending:
It doesn't have the cute, black eyes of the 80s final transformation, but it's still pretty grotesque, which I'm glad was a standard they kept to.
By the way, all these images are from the 2008 Paris premiere of the opera. I couldn't find a full version of it anywhere online, so on the off chance somebody does have it please share. There is however a French documentary of it. I haven't fully watched it cause I don't speak French but its got some good clips
