The Fondas | Runaway Bombshell | Sympathy for the Record Industry | 2006 | garage rock
A little sweeter and spit-polished than the Detroit Cobras, with (mostly) originals instead of covers, but if female-fronted rock with '50s and '60s-inspired melodies is your jam, then you'll like these guys. Unlike Harrison, I'm unable to actually tell you things like, you know, what instruments are being played or what the structure of the songs are, or really anything about the music at all except that it sounds good. But that's the kind of rigorous professionalism you're paying for. Standouts are the uptempo kiss-off, "Don't Come Back," the slow-burning "What" and "That's All" and the garage-punk, "What To Do." Good shit.
