Marcus' parents thinking he was a burden because of his dyslexia and his never moving forward or learning anything, and the way they simply dismiss everything he does and who he really is, and Marcus creating this persona that cares about his looks and appearance because he's actually trying to avert his parents, just like they always wanted to do to him, and yes, there's a river flowing down my face right now
