i keep thinking about the milkovich family and the ride or die mindset where they are willing to help each other commit murder with no questions asked, but they won't confide in each other or support each other emotionally. they're all about action and loyalty and death before dishonour. but none of them even seem to know each other personally beyond their established position within the household.

its like a hierarchy, an organization more than a family. and that's all they've known. that's normal for them. in the earlier seasons they're always dirty and scratched up and parade that around like war paint. being milkovich sets them apart, and it stops people from getting too close, and terry likely told them that was a good thing, that being feared made them powerful. but it just allowed the dynamic to continue.

the closest we see to a more traditional sibling relationship is mickey and mandy, and this is only really apparent after they both start hanging out with ian. they banter, they tease, they play video games and mandy visits him in juvie and picks him up.

i think that their individual relationships with ian gave them an insight to what a family dynamic is supposed to be for the first time. the gallaghers are loyal to each other in a way that means their end goal is to better the family. they will do everything and anything to ensure that in the end they stay together and the family remains intact. there's no instant agreement to murder with you, but they won't judge you for wanting to, won't snitch and will ask how you feel and why you want to do that and be a voice of reason and a sounding board and remind you of the consequences.

it's a layered and complex form of love and care that the milkoviches weren't capable of, had never had.

with that in mind it explains why mandy tries to dismiss her sexual abuse as 'not a big deal', confuses ian's concern for judgement, and feels that an abusive relationship is all she can get.

it explains why mickey's internalized homophobia is so deep-rooted at first, so aggressive and violent. he believes his sexuality is not only all the negative things that terry has made him believe, but he believes it marks him as being not milkovich. and if he's not milkovich, what is he?

with the milkovich ride or die, death before dishonour, there's no line they won't cross for each other mentality, mickey likely sees his own secret as a line he never should've crossed, and so he has no choice but to overcompensate because if you step out of line, out of the established order of terry's world and the milkovich household, you're asking for death.

the way that ian - and then by extention the gallaghers - help mickey and mandy see what loyalty should be, what familial love can mean, shifts their perspective.

when ian was manic in season 5, suddenly mickey and mandy aren't all in to murder the guy because it's what ian wants, they know that ian isn't thinking rationally and hasn't considered the consequences and that he will almost certainly regret it. so the way to be actually loyal to ian in this instance is to deny him, to stop him, to work against him temporarily and find a compromise.

whereas in season 2 mickey just walks into the milkovich kitchen like 'i wanna kill frank gallagher' and his brothers put up only a token protest and mostly because it seems like an inconvenience to them. they don't actually care why mickey wants to do this. they don't really consider the consequences in an in-depth way other than to not wanna get caught.

mickey was not thinking clearly in that moment. mickey was panicked and acting out of self-preservation, with his fight or flight severely triggered. his brothers didn't notice or care enough to know, and that's just the milkovich way.

TLDR: i wish we got a more in-depth depiction and analysis of the milkovich family, and i will always be really sensitive about that fact that ian managed to shift the dynamics and perspective of both mandy and mickey by just loving them.

ian saved them both and i don't think he even realises how much. there's nothing they wouldn't do for him. they are who they are now because of him

I'm interested by a Shameless revival, really, but a too angxty direction worries me. The end, maybe unperfect, is so optimistic to me. The two last seasons shows us most of the characters more soothed, able to built a life for themselves, able to have a support system, sometimes out of their siblings, Ian with Mickey, Lip with Brad. For me, coming to a family with complicated bonding, living with a major disability it's important. If a revival exists, showing tthe difficulties to be steady will probably be a topic, Shameless is about getting by and coping mechanisms. But... I would wanna see characters having joyful moments, a kind of preservation of the things we see at the end of the show, particularly for Ian/Mickey, Lip and Carl. I wanna see Ian and Mickey happily maried, Ian managing his bipolar without with his husband help and possibly in a arc of groth, Lip still making efforts to stay sober, Carl still happy in his different jobs, Ian and Mickey in a long terme mariage, still being the support of each other. I don't know for the rest of the cast, but I hope everything will doing well for them.

Two days had passed and you weren’t really planning on going out. You weren’t feeling it. All you wanted was to stay in your room but then Debbie invited you to a barbecue and bonfire.

You weren’t planning to stay long. Just a drop-in, a polite wave, and maybe a plate of food to go. But then V caught your arm before you could bolt and said, “You look like you need to sit for once.” So now, you were here.

Sitting on the edge of a lawn chair, picking at your drink, while Carl sat across the yard on the back steps—legs stretched out, a beer bottle balanced between his knees, and Kayla leaning into his side as if she lived there.

He hadn’t spoken in what felt like forever.

No “hey.” No smirks. No passing comments. Not even the sarcastic little remarks he used to throw your way just to get you riled up. It wasn't like it was new... it had been... two weeks.

You caught his eyes for a split second when you glanced up. It was always a split second. He was always looking when he thought you weren’t.

Kayla said something beside him, and he laughed. A low and lazy laughed. And it was almost worse than being ignored.

You excused yourself to the kitchen.

The screen door creaked open a moment later. You didn’t have to turn around to know it was him. You suddenly felt like your lungs suddenly forgot how to do their job.

Carl walked past you. Opened the fridge. Grabbed a beer.

He stood on the opposite end of the kitchen, leaning against the counter. Close enough to touch, but miles away.

You pretended to be busy stacking solo cups, but your hand trembled when one slipped. He didn’t move to help.

You glanced sideways.

He was already watching.

But the moment your eyes met, he looked away. As if he couldn’t bear to look at you for too long without giving something away.

He opened the back door again and disappeared before you could say anything.

Not that you would, obviously. You didn’t even know what you’d say anymore.

You stayed in the kitchen a minute longer. Just long enough to miss him walking back to Kayla.

As the sun set and someone lit a bonfire in a rusted pit, people started sitting closer, the drinks kicking in, and the mood shifting. You ended up squished between Fiona and Debbie on the old couch dragged out from the house, your knees pulled to your chest, arms wrapped loosely around them.

Carl was across the fire, sitting on the edge of a cooler, talking with Ian, occasionally smirking like they were reminiscing or sharing something stupid and funny. Kayla was nowhere to be seen.

You couldn’t help watching them—him—through the flickering flames. His eyes caught the firelight every now and then, sharp and unreadable. How his foot bounced slightly, like he was either bored or trying not to look over. You hated that it had been more than a week. That you’d been counting the days since he last spoke to you like it meant nothing.

Between flickers of flame, you caught his eyes on you. It was never that long. But it was enough. Just enough to burn. l

When Debbie leaned closer to tell you a story, he looked. When you tucked your hair behind your ear, he looked. When you laughed, he looked.

It was all so quiet. But so loud.

You shifted slightly, feeling the worn couch springs creak beneath you. Fiona got up to grab another drink, leaving space and a colder breeze in her place.

Carl watched you again. This time, he didn’t look away.

Your eyes met across the fire.

And for a split second, it felt like it used to be—like there was no space, no silence, no weight between you. You didn’t smile. You didn’t look away. You just stared back, as if maybe in the silence, something could be said.

A beat passed. Then another. You swore your heart tripped in your chest. But before anything could happen, Ian nudged him and Carl dropped his eyes, letting out a breathy laugh as he responded—tearing his gaze away like it didn’t just gut you. He leaned in closer to his brother, chuckling, as if you weren’t there at all.

You blinked, looking down at the cup in your hands, fingers tightening around it.

He hadn’t spoken to you in a week. But he looked at you like he missed you.

Like he hated that he did.

And it was starting to hurt.

Across the fire, Carl shifted. He set his bottle down with a quiet thud and got up, murmuring something to Ian before disappearing toward the house again.

You watched the door shut behind him.

You tried not to wonder if he left because he couldn’t stand the sight of you like this.

But it lingered.

That weight in your chest, the heat in your cheeks. That feeling that something was broken, or maybe just unfinished.

And the worst part?

You didn’t even know what you did. Or if you did anything at all.

You stayed there a few more minutes, but the noise around the fire began to blur into the background—laughter, clinking bottles, the occasional burst of music from inside. None of it could shake the heavy knot curling tighter in your stomach.

You set your cup down on the chair and stood up.

Debbie called after you, something like “You okay?” but you just gave her a small smile and a nod before slipping away through the side gate.

Your bike was leaning against the fence, right where you left it.

You swung your leg over and pushed off with a soft grunt, your wheels crunching the gravel as you rode off into the street. No destination. Only motion.

The cool wind kissed your cheeks as you pedaled, harder and faster, like maybe the ache wouldn’t catch up. The hum of the EL above echoed faintly through the streets. You passed glowing storefronts with windows that reflected orange-pink skies, and front yards where porch lights flickered one by one.

Somewhere, a dad called for his kid to come inside. The sound of a screen door creaked shut. Life, moving on like nothing was falling apart inside you.

You made your way toward the bay without even thinking.

The air turned saltier. Softer. The horizon stretched out wide ahead, painted in fading streaks of peach and lavender. You climbed off your bike and let it rest against the concrete barrier, then walked toward the edge, stepping up onto the wide slab overlooking the water.

The city shimmered in the distance, buildings blinking like stars that never slept.

You sat there, the cool breeze of the night wrapping around you, your hair tossing lightly in the wind as the soft colors of the sunset faded.

You breathed.

The ache didn’t leave. But it settled and became quieter.

The water moved with a rhythm that didn’t ask anything of you. It just existed. It didn’t need answers. Didn’t demand you make sense of Carl’s silence. Or his stare. Or the way everything between you two used to be simple until it wasn’t.

You close your eyes for a second, listening to the waves gently slap the wall below, the occasional car passing behind you.

And you thought—
