Working out Thomas Hamilton’s religious beliefs like I’m solving a rubix cube. On one hand, you could read him as the most authentically Christian character in Black Sails. On the other hand, it’s impossible to imagine him complying with any kind of church orthodoxy and his lines about “fighting a war in the service of the son of God” read much less like zealotry than disgust at the hypocrisy of using religion to justify state violence. He (and Miranda) quote scripture more fully and with more conviction than anyone else in the show. And yet if the writers had pitched them both as staunch atheists it would be totally believable. Thomas Hamilton who are you??!?? What is going on in your weird bewigged head???

#i just…aghghggm #it is SUCH a great touch and it does so much to ground him in his historical context #in fact the lack of religiosity is one of the things that pulls black sails out of the realm of strict historical fiction for me #which is of course fine and makes sense #but it makes the hamiltons stick out like sore sad thumbs in the best way #and i love chewing on the thought of what these people do or dont believe #istg if he had a cult id join it just to figure out wth his deal is #black sails #the hamiltons
