Fit For a King - Falling Through The Sky
Fit For A King have been around since 2007, based in Texas this new album marks their 7th Full length record. I think my favourite is “Sink Below”, it’s definitely got the best chorus on the album for me, like pushing different traditional metalcore writing styles together like Killswitch Engage swirling around As I Lay Dying, there’s something very familiar and nostalgic about it but not to the extent where that’s the focus, it’s like an extension into the modern day. Close second is the track they guest the beasts in The Ghost Inside on, “Times Like These” is more of the same, high octane drumming with crunchy rhythm guitars and flowing higher pitch licks, which already gives me a shot of adrenaline but then towards the end the whole thing just drops and blasts you in the chest, brilliant. In “What You Left Behind” they switch from very soft and gentle vocals then this symphonic backing contrasts against the intense and heavy March of tones which you normally expect of someone like Lorna Shore, it added some spice right at the end of the album. “Reaching Out” is a swaying song with themes of understanding and reassurance, it’s still got a grunt on it but utilised in a different way, “Falling Through The Sky” is another one in a similar style except it’s more of a wavey floaty vibe. If you fancy just some straight up neck snapping, teeth gnashing heavy stuff then I direct your attention to “Reaper” and “Eyes Roll Back”. Solid album from the lads, check them out on tour with The Amity Affliction!!

Fit For A King - The Hell We Create The new record from metalcore crew Fit For A King is aptly titled, because vocalist Ryan Kirby has had one hell of a year. I don’t mean to dive right into this album within the first couple of sentences, but this album is as good as it is, because it’s the most vulnerable and honest that Kirby has ever been, and because of that, this is the best his vocals have ever sounded. The title of this LP, The Hell We Create, refers to the idea that people can create their own hell that they’re living in, so to speak, whether it’s from choices they make that impact their lives in a negative, or bad things that happen to you, ultimately putting you in a bad place on accident. Sometimes we create our own hell, and Kirby should know a thing or two about that. The album deals with him almost losing his wife to a stroke due to birth control, as well as adopting his wife’s niece and nephew from their abusive parents. They were put in the foster care system and went through seventeen different homes until they went to them, and it’s rather heart-wrenching stuff. The lyrics on this LP are some of the most hard-hitting I’ve heard all year, and that’s partially why this album works so well for me, because it’s got a lot of emotional weight to it. Some of the album even deals with Kirby grappling with his faith, and that’s what’s most interesting to me, because this band is a Christian band. They’re not overly preachy anything, but they’re notably a Christian band, so hearing their vocalist openly question his faith when all of these awful things are happening to him, it’s very telling and interesting. You do need to look at the album as a whole, too, and if you dig into the instrumentation and production, that’s where the album slightly falters for me, but not by much. This is, by all definitions, a Fit For A King album, and by that, I mean you’ll get a lot of clean choruses, screamed verses, breakdowns, and all of the stuff you’d expect from a metalcore album, but here’s the thing -- it’s done well. Fit For A King is one of my favorite metalcore bands, and the reason why is because they do what they do very well. They did attempt to go more into a radio-rock sound on their last album, but this one pivots back to metalcore on a lot of it. Some of the heaviest breakdowns and harsh vocals I’ve heard all year are on this record, but there are some really catchy songs, too. The lyrics are just the best part of it, and the most interesting part as well, because if you’re gripped by the lyrics, the album not being very unique won’t bother you. It’s never bothered me, because at least they execute this sound very well, and they have a knack for catchy hooks, killer breakdowns, and a great sound. That’s all you need, though, and when this album is only 38 minutes, it’s a quick listen. It goes by before you know it. Personally, I’d say this album is one of my favorites of the year, just for its lyrics alone. They’re very emotional, and unless you’re heartless yourself, you can’t help but feel for this guy and what he’s been through the last year. He really lays it all out there, and for that, I have to give him credit, but the rest of the album is solid, too.

Album Review: Fit for a King - The Hell We Create (Solid State Records)
Their most personal record might also be their finest record to date.
Trauma and tragedy transfer from one generation to the next. As difficult as it may be, we still possess the power to break the cycle and start anew. Fit for a King ponder the pain of these cycles and the possibility to end them on their seventh full-length offering, The Hell We Create. It is out on October 28th, 2022 via Solid State Records. This uniquely personal and powerful album begins in…
