I don't have time to write my thoughts on The Inquiry yet. so have some of my favourite quotes from the audio drama instead:

Leela: "I thought this was meant to be an independent inquiry?" Braxiatel: "Oh, yes, absolutely. I like to be independent on the right side, that's all."

Leela: "Perhaps one day he and Romana will earn your trust." Narvin: "I doubt it."

Braxiatel: "Whoever did this was extremely clever." Romana: "Perhaps it was me then."

Romana: [Fondly] "But then I remembered reading up on the Braxiatel collection. Once, long ago, on my travels."

Then there's also the whole paragraph Narvin gives to compliment Romana. While she's not in the room, of course.

Ya know what struck me about that scene with Leela and Narvin toward the end of The Inquiry? It shows that even Narvin, as terrible as he is right now, has limits to his nastiness. When he’s telling Leela about Andred’s setup and gets to the part where Andred said horrible things about Leela to bait Narvin, Narvin hesitates and talks around it for like two or three turns of dialogue before actually saying it. He knows how awful it is, and even though he currently hates Leela and is absolutely repulsed by her—not to mention she threatens to maim/kill him multiple times in this scene alone—he doesn’t want to tell her. Doesn’t want her to know what Andred said, even if Andred didn’t mean it.

Honestly don’t know where I’m going with this except to say that the Narvin we know and love is there, even from the beginning

Oh right! I I finished Series 1 of Gallifrey, I should give my updated impressions of the Gallifrey characters

Torvald → You know when I said “I wanna do to him what Achilles did to Hector in the Iliad”? I'm glad I (kinda) got exactly what I wanted.

Andred → (cue Avatar: The Last Airbender meme) “That’s rough, buddy.”

Narvin → My original read was “the human embodiment of that one damp couch spot that’s been there since 2006 and you’re too scared to ask why.” Nothing in Series 1 changed that.

Braxiatel → I still stand by “he reads a Thesaurus for sexual arousal.” But now I know that if you ever mentioned having “lewd thoughts,” he’d scoff… and then quietly slide you a sticky note under the table with the Gallifreyan equivalent of an ISBN number. It’s a Thesaurus.

Romana → "I do sort of like it when she's rude to me. Hopefully that's more a psychological defect than a weird sexual thing."

K9 → I'm convinced there's secretly a little cat inside K9 with little foot pedals that's managed to fool everyone into thinking they're a robot dog. I'm onto you K9, if that is your real name

Leela → Needs more knives. (Someone, probably: “But she already has a lot of knives!” Me: more.)

On a serious note though—Leela is one of the sharpest characters in the entire Gallifrey lineup, and it kills me how often the characters mistake her lack of academic vocabulary for a lack of intelligence. She has this razor-honed intuition and emotional intelligence that lets her cut straight to the heart of a situation while the so-called “brilliant” Time Lords are busy posturing and debating semantics. She sees people clearly, she understands patterns, and she acts decisively—qualities none of the mean nerd virgins around her seem to fully respect because she doesn’t couch it in the pompous language they take seriously. She’s a perfect example of a character whose intellect is rooted in instinct, observation, and lived experience rather than books and theories—and that makes her both incredibly capable and deeply underappreciated. Honestly, Leela deserves a medal for surviving Gallifrey without stabbing half of them.

VERY curious abt whether there are differences in the ranking of 'nobility' beyond their occupations, spurred by narvin & torvald introducing themselves by their name vs 'lady romanadvoratrelundar.' brax also gets 'my lord cardinal' later.

'and all her dominions' <- say more.

so 'centuries ago' braxiatel was 'a lowly functionary' 'recently returned from various ambassadorial missions' and narvin was 'a young technician.' but even then braxiatel had 'certain privileges' and 'friends in high places.'

do we ever get other examples of marriage besides leela's?

'would they have let you [leave gallifrey]?' 'no, i doubt it.' >:D

'technically narvin is a diplomat' <- is he indeed? perhaps some implications on brax being described as one (and the doctor)?

so torvald is a member of a chapter and we've got individual academies. okay. [writes something down]
