The Knock
I hear him mumbling to himself as he moves to leave the bed. He hates being wakened by his bladder. As many times as I have told him not to drink right before bed, he still does. Men can be stubborn, I have learned. I drift back towards sleep, only partly conscious of him returning. We both are drifting back into sleep.
A knock on the bedroom door wakes me. “Hey, why is this door locked.” I hear my husband saying. Barely awake, I struggle to remember, had I locked the door? No, I don’t think so but I must have. Stumbling, I get up to answer it. That is when I recall him returning to bed. A scream comes out my mouth. “What I wrong! Open this door, now!”
“What is going on?” The other man, a person the identical of my husband, to his looks to his tune of voice, asks.
Eyes wide, heart pounding, I work my way to the door and open it. He comes through and looks at me. My face must have reflected my terror. He takes my arms, “Honey, what is it?” In answer, I point to the bed. “Our bed, what?” I look back. He is sitting up staring at me
“Him. You. You see him don’t you?”
“See who?” They both answer me and I feel the world tilt. It is a firm line between sanity and lack of it. At that moment, I stepped over it.
My psychiatrist looks at me. “But now you know that there is just one of him, right?” I want out of there. Knowing what to say, that is a skill I picked up in the ward.
“Yes. I know it is just one of them.”
The next day, they come to pick me up. I must be careful to pretend they are one. I don’t want to return.
“Shall we go?”
“Are you ready my darling?”
“I am ready to leave. Let’s go.” I answer them both. We walk out together.
