The Krickets Bring A Dream To Life With New Album “RedBird”
Alabama-based female Americana group, The Krickets, will be dropping their sophomore album, Redbird, this Friday October 26th. The sisterhood of songwriters, under the guidance of Grammy-nominated producer Sam Ashworth, recorded 11 harmony-driven "swamp folk" tracks in just five days. Redbird is an elegant presentation of the group's stories of love, hope, struggle, and female empowerment.
Members Katrina Kolb, Melissa Bowman Weigle, Emily Stuckey Sellers, and Lauren Spring infuse elements of Americana and country, and hints of bluegrass to compose a sound that perfectly fits as the backdrop to their inspiring tales. The album is filled with lush vocal harmonies that reinforces overarching themes of strength and perseverance, highlighted in tracks like "I Am Strong", "Shame Game", "What Do You Say", and "May We Find".
The album's single, "Redbird", was inspired by a recurring dream Emily had shortly after her grandmother passed away in which she saw redbirds in places from her everyday life. In the dream, she could never understand what her grandmother was trying to tell her. The song came to her after coming up with the main guitar riff and soon after recording, the dreams stopped.
Other notable tracks include, "Lay Them Down", one of the co-written tracks that alludes to each member's personal experiences with hardship while speaking to everyone's universal journey and spreading messages of hope and encouragement, as well as "Ghosts", which features Sam's exceptional production, as he creates an ominous atmosphere full of echoing drums and airy vocal harmonies.

7 From The Women is a new segment here on Independent Artist Buzz where we ask some of the industries finest seven questions. During this time of accusations and the lack thereof, we think it’s important to give women a voice. We chose to ask seven questions to honor the seven Wiccan clans.
The Krickets are a female Americana group from the gulf coast. They released their first album "Spanish Moss Sirens" in May of 2016, and their single “Cool Cool Water” was the 2016 IMA Folk Song of the Year. We caught up with them this week to talk about their new releases.
What have you been working to promote lately?
We have been working to promote singles off of our unreleased album Redbird. An official video for Redbird was released in September. The video features our band mates playing together on one of favorite stages, and also has a storyline. The storyline of redbird touches on the connection one feels with a love one after they’ve gone. Specifically in the video, this person is her grandmother coming to her in a dream trying to tell her something, but Emily keeps waking up before she can understand what her grandmother is trying to say. The frustration and contemplation she feels over the dream is reflected in the video through the music and flashback scenes with the character of her grandmother. The connection of showing them both sleeping in the same spot, walking the same steps, wearing the same heirloom ring are all supposed to drive home how strong their connection is.
Please tell us about your favorite song written, recorded or produced by another woman and why it’s meaningful to you.
A favorite song written and performed by a woman would have to be “I will always love you” by Dolly Parton. This song always touched my heart because she was able to tell a dear friend that meant the absolute world to her that it was time to go their separate ways in life. I have grown and changed so much in my life that I had to leave behind friends that were on completely different paths than myself. That is life but she loved that friend enough to be honest.
What does it mean to you to be a woman in the music business today and do you feel a responsibility to other women to create messages and themes in your music?
There's such a strong female empowerment movement going on in today's society, and I feel so proud to be able to say anything I need or want even if it's the ugly truth. It feels great to not fear that I'll be judged or put down because I'm a female, and I have something to say. We do feel a strong responsibility to women to bare situations that were scary and very real in our songs in hopes that others don't have to go through the same things.
Do you consider yourself a feminist? If so why and if not why?
Our band was formed around a breast cancer benefit in honor of a local 22 year old woman in our community that lost her life to breast cancer. We even named our band after her and continue to donate to the fund. “I am strong” is a song we recorded on our unreleased album that was written about another dear friend who was battling the same disease. We are all about uplifting our fans that are going through sickness or hard times.
What female artists have inspired and influenced you?
Stevie Nicks, Loretta Lynn, Rachel Price, Cary Ann Hearst, and Alison Krauss.
Who was the first female artist you saw that made you want to create music/ be in the music business?
Dolly Parton
If you could collaborate with any other female artists who would you choose
Stevie Nicks.
