The other night my good friend from work had a birthday celebration with our other coworker friends! We brought Kate and Adam along to experience a night out in Shibuya! We went to a really scary haunted-house type bar called “The Lockup” it was supposed to be like an insane asylum prison! The interior was so cool and spooky! They even “lock” you up in your own cell. We ordered a bunch of spooky drinks and screamed at the scary animatronics that popped out of nowhere! So much fun!
Oops it took me two weeks to update again but oh well.
I’ll start with work stuff – one of my JTE’s left due to another English teacher coming back from leave so last week I started teaching with the returning teacher. I won’t lie, I was extremely nervous about the change and how we would handle the kids in class but things have gone pretty well so far. There have been some tiny bumps and awkward moments due to us not knowing how to read each other yet, and possibly because she hasn’t team taught much (I’m not entirely sure but I don’t think she’s worked with an ALT before). She also seems very nice so I think we’ll work well together. The other main thing at work is that I’ve gotten my recontracting forms. My school seemed really eager for me to sign them but I let them know I was going to need some time to consider but I’m like 99% sure I’m going to ask for a second year. I really like it here and I’m not really sure what I want to do when I go home so I’d like the extra time to consider and make preparations like possibly taking the GRE.
Now that the boring work stuff is out of the way – I had a fantastic long weekend!!! My friend wasn’t able to visit after all, but I did go to see BIGBANG! Another ALT friend of mine had a ticket for the same day so we went to the stadium together and bought merch before heading off to our separate seats. I’ve never been to a concert on that scale before but it was really a dream come true since I have liked BIGBANG since I was in high school. Some of my students went but I didn’t run into them (thankfully), and a few other students who knew I was going asked me about it today. After BIGBANG we got dinner in Osaka and then I went back to my friend’s place to stay over because we were so hyped up and excited after the concert. I ended up spending all day Sunday over there too and helped decorate her Christmas tree. Thanks to Labor Thanksgiving Day being on Monday we had a three day weekend and I met up with friends in Kobe to go to the theme restaurant “The Lockup.” They have them all over Japan, so anyone in the country do look them up! It’s a sort of horror prison theme and all the waiters and waitresses are dressed as police officers or prisoners. The tables are all in their own cage as well so it’s like you’re really behind bars. There are cocktails and food that match the theme of the restaurant as well as a bunch of other stuff. Honestly the food and drinks weren’t that great but the atmosphere was really cool. As we were eating, we got a sudden shock when the lights went out and a creepy little girl’s voice echoed through the restaurant. After she finished her first mini speech a bunch of people dressed as ghosts came out and started looking creepily through the bars of everyone’s jail cells. It was a little scary but not too bad at that point…but then the little girl said something different and the ghosts OPENED THE CELL DOORS. They started coming in and leaning into our faces and we were freaking out. Then, a ghost climbed the ladder on the outside of our cell and HALF CLIMBED OVER THE TOP AND STARTED BANGING ON THE INSIDE OF OUR CELL DOOR RIGHT BY MY HEAD. The all caps basically reflect my state of mind at the time. Oddly enough, after all the monsters finally disappeared, they started flashing multicolored lights and playing dance music for a few minutes during which time we all kind of nervously bopped in our seats because at that point the restaurant was not to be trusted. Terrifying as it was, we actually had a really great time and afterwards we went to a game center and played Taiko no Tatsujin (Taiko Drum Master) and Mario Kart. All-in-all I had a fun and eventful long weekend and now I’m basically halfway through my work week.
That’s really everything for now. I probably won’t have much to update on until Winter Break starts but we’ll see. Til then~
