Last week for my birthday, my friends surprised me with a party at their apartment! We made homemade dumplings (my favorite), played games, and ate delicious chocolate cake! This was such a great birthday, I am so grateful to have made such amazing friends here! We always have so much fun together!
Last night I went out with work friends again! This time with the team I’ve been working most with. I love these guys so much! We really made such a good team. It was very emotional saying goodbye...
This past week was my last week at my job here in Tokyo. I was very very sad to say goodbye to my students and their sweet families. We had all become so close over the year. On my last couple days I was showered with gifts and photos from my students and their families. I also got some amazing hand drawn pictures of me which made me a very proud art teacher. I will never forget my students and the times we all had. I’m so very lucky to have found this job.
After our adorable time at the bunny/hedgehog cafe, we walked over to Tokyo Tower as it was in the same part of the city! It’s so cool seeing it peek out behind buildings and trees as you walk down the street. Such a neat structure.
For dinner we took our friends to our favorite little hole in the wall Korean restaurant up the street from our apartment. The food is amazing, cheap, and perfectly made by the sweet old Korean woman who owns the shop! Oishii!!
After exploring Itoya, we made our way to Roppongi to visit the Bunny/Hedgehog cafe!! My mom sent me a link to this place a while ago, I hadn’t heard of it until then! I’ve been promising and promising I would go before we leave and I finally got the chance to go. But unfortunately when we got there, it was the hedgehogs’ resting time so we weren’t able to hold them...what timing we have! But don’t worry we were still able to hold the sweet sweet bunnies they had. My friend Kate is a huge bunny fan so she was in her heaven!
The bunnies were so sweet and they were very well taken care of. This cafe is clean and the staff is very attentive to the rabbits’ needs. Their cages are big and full of hay for them to eat and very clean. They make sure to give each animal time to rest during business hours, because being held by so many people all day can stress them out. So we could only chose ones that have finished their nap time! They also encourage you not to hold the rabbit too long as they don’t really like it. You get 30 minutes with the rabbits but have to split the time between 2 different rabbits, 15 minutes each, this way one doesn’t get overwhelmed from being held the whole 30 minutes. I was happy to see how much they cared for the rabbits and hedgehogs!
The cuteness level was off the charts haha there was a lot of squealing going on! I’m so happy I finally got to see this place! Thanks mom for the recommendation!
Yesterday Kate, Adam, and I ventured to Ginza to visit the famous stationary store Itoya. This store is always on lists for best places to buy Japanese souvenirs. I had never been to Ginza so I was excited to see what it was like. Ginza is a very rich part of Tokyo and right when we got off the train we were surrounded by huge designer names like Louis Vuitton, Chanel, Gucci, Fendi, Cartier...etc.
Itoya was huge! Way bigger than we expected. 12 stories of various household items, craft supplies, expensive one of a kind pens, office supplies, travel cases, etc. It was amazing. Unfortunately a lot of the things in there were pretty expensive so I just had fun exploring. I got to try out a $900 pen....it didn’t feel very special but something must’ve been special about it haha!
The other night my good friend from work had a birthday celebration with our other coworker friends! We brought Kate and Adam along to experience a night out in Shibuya! We went to a really scary haunted-house type bar called “The Lockup” it was supposed to be like an insane asylum prison! The interior was so cool and spooky! They even “lock” you up in your own cell. We ordered a bunch of spooky drinks and screamed at the scary animatronics that popped out of nowhere! So much fun!
The other day I toured our friends around Tokyo some more and took them to a must-see sight, Tokyo Skytree! The tallest building in Tokyo! The mall there is amazing so we spent the day shopping and eating yummy ramen! We also went up to see the stunning view of Tokyo. I’ll never not be in awe of this sprawling city...
After checking out Kencho-ji temple we made our way into town to shop and eat! Kamakura is such a sweet little coastal town. The streets are all lined with unique little shops and restaurants. We stopped and got some fresh made soba noodles from a small restaurant and then made our way to my favorite shop! My favorite shop is called “Neco Salon” neko means cat so it’s basically a store full of cat-themed items! I got a cute t-shirt and a tote bag both sporting cats lol!
After walking through town, we made our way to Kotoku-in Temple where the famous Kamakura Daibutsu is aka the giant Buddha statue. This is another one of my favorite spots in Japan. This statue is so breathtaking and serene. I’ve been here 3 times and I’m still in shock and awe like I was the first time I saw it. We knew we had to show our friends this spot.

After Meigetsu-in we went to Kencho-ji. This is a large complex with many temples in various sizes as well as gardens and a cemetery. This temple really reminds me of the temple Todai-ji in Nara. These large complexes are so peaceful and make for a beautiful walk. There are always new things around the corner. And it only cost 200 yen for admission!

After visiting Ofuna Kannon, we took the train one more stop to Kita-Kamakura where our favorite temple Meigetsu-in. This temple is famous for it’s seemingly endless ocean of hydrangeas in the early summer. Wren and I have been very excited to go back during the hydrangea season. It was just as gorgeous as we hoped. A must-see!!
**In Japanese hydrangeas are called “ajisai” If Wren and I ever get a round fluffy cat we’ve agreed to name it Ajisai lol
Last week we had some friends from college come visit from the states! One of the places we made sure to show them was Kamakura...one of Wren and I’s favorite places in Japan. Only an hour train ride from Tokyo, Kamakura is a breath of fresh air from the busy city streets of Tokyo. We’re currently in the hydrangea season so there are big lush hydrangea bushes everywhere!
Our first stop was actually in a town just outside of Kamakura called Ofuna. This is where the big Kannon statue is that Wren and I stumbled upon on our first trip to Kamakura in September! This statue is breathtakingly huge and is nestled in such a beautiful little mountaintop filled with flowers. I’m so glad we got to show our friends one of our favorite sites.
Yesterday was my last day of work in Tokyo, so after work me and my coworkers went out for drinks and food at a Hawaiian restaurant near work. It was such a bittersweet experience...I will miss these girls so much! I really got so lucky with finding this job here. I couldn't have asked for better coworkers!
Last weekend we met up with friends at our neighborhood owl cafe! Wren and I haven't been here since shortly after we moved to Tokyo, so it's been a while! I was happy to visit again. This time I finally got to hold the cafe's Barn Owl! Her name was Patti-san and she was so beautiful and sweet! She really liked Wren and kept staring at him and flying up on his shoulder. We had a great time showing our friends one of Wren and I's favorite spots!
