The false sense of security.

on one of those early mornings

when we’re awake by mistake

and don’t want to be-

both of us trying to catch sleep again

before it fizzles, evaporates,

leaves nothing more than

gold dust in the corners of our eyes

and a bewildered fondness and longing

for dreams we no longer recall-

through our mound of blankets,

i feel you roll over,

press your body into mine

i know not if it was intentional

or merely a heart fluttering happenstance

i know not which part of you is touching me, even,

and i don’t care

i feel far more blanket than you,

yet i’m thinking of you anyway

thank you for loving me

enough to disturb your sleep,

thank you for your warmth-

it and you do wonders for my sore, tired body-

thank you for being here

such a simple thing

and where else would you be, anyway?

but thank you nonetheless

i’ll breathe ‘thank you’ into every kiss

when we’re ready to wake ‘for real’
