Things got pretty dark on their last single, but now it’s time for The Microdance to switch gears as they take a cruise down ‘Hippo Highway’...

What begins as a hazy, slow-spun cut of shoegaze soon becomes an almighty rush of stormy indie rock, where pulsing bass tones and unforgiving riffs tear up the sonic terrain as frontman Alex Keevill’s wild howl effortlessly melds with the dreamy hush of Abigail Hardiman. Yet another rock opus courtesy of The Microdance that’s majestic from start to finish.

If you’re gonna make a comeback, you might as well make it loud as The Microdance have done with ‘Get Darker,’ their newest material since last year’s ‘The Ride Today’ and further back in 2015 with the release of their debut album New Waves of Hope.

The epic 7-minute track unleashes a much rougher vibe compared to the London-based band’s usual hazy psychedelia, where spidery guitars creep along the spine of a drowsy drum beat while blending hints of spooky New Wave, haunting shoegaze and fuzzy goth pop, before kicking it into gear with a solid heavy metal breakdown. The track even quotes the Satanic Bible complete with a suitably demonic voice, so the track certainly lives up to its title... *devil horns*

Frontman Alex Keevill explains about the track via press release:

‘After a couple months of entertaining the idea of going solo, I felt the need to have the heavy metal Gods on my side again! So I very quickly put together a killer lineup and decided that new music should be the priority. I had over a hundred songs to choose from; but challenged myself to write something new - a song that hits hard from the off. I originally intended Get Darker to be the musical equivalent of a fast food mini meal; but as is often the case with my songs, it ended up being more like a 12 course tasting menu. I thought to myself 'We have financial restrictions, we can only do one song; so let's give them an EP's worth of music in that one song.' I think we succeeded.’

Ephemeral atmosphere from Shoe-gaze rockers The Microdance. The Ride Today was a lush and dramatic dream soundscape with haunting vocals set to a majestic melody and is part of their of a double A-side that also featured Come Back To Me My Lover In The Sky. Recently the four-piece has disbanded but new music should be coming one way or another via a different name or a continuation.

It’s been so long since we’ve heard from London quartet The Microdance but finally their brand of psychedelic rock has returned, releasing the double A-side single ‘The Ride Today’/’Come Back To Me My Lover In The Sky’ (the latter track taken from the band’s debut album New Waves Of Hope).

Rich in atmospherics, ‘The Ride Today’ takes a hazy trip through slow drum crawls and soaring riffs that have a classic rock edge, the track gorgeously euphoric but with a certain melancholy that lingers as Alex Keevil’s powerful rasp rips through the sonic expanse.

Via press release, Keevil explains about the track:

‘The Ride Today is an interesting one because I think a lot of people who have heard snippets of what we've done think it's a new direction for the band [...] I actually wrote the song before we recorded New Waves of Hope and it is in fact redolent of my pre TMD songs; it just didn't fit with the consistent, more organic rocky vibe of the album. It's a sound that I love - gloopy, new wavey, and slightly gothic. A friend said to me when she heard the demo,' you've outcured The Cure.' I'll take that!’

New single from The Microdance - The Ride Today

For N64 fans, you know what the next best game was right next to Mario Kart…Super Mario 64. I love it so much that to this day still kills me that I’ve never played the Wii version of the game… or ever got a Wii.

And apparently I’m not alone in my love, with London-based band The Microdance using the game as inspiration for the video for the latest single from their atmospheric debut record New Waves Of Hope.

Much like previous single ‘Making Plans For The End,’ the video for ‘We Meet In Dreams’ applies a DIY aesthetic that proves strange and fun in equal measure, parodying Super Mario 64 and other video game tropes, while also splicing in moody, double-exposed effects. The video itself was filmed in and around lush, green gardens located in East London and because of this, it makes for something quite dreamlike as the visuals are paired with the track’s expansive layers of shoegazy guitars, rolling drums and warm, smoky distortion, crafting a rather ambitious piece of indie psychedelia.
