I'm trying to keep an open mind about this whole thing, but every time I see someone seriously on the #CancelColbert bandwagon I can't stop comparing them to the people that tried to chase Jonathan Swift out of England because of the Modest Proposal.
Reading the Modest Proposal
Today in my English class we started to read the Modest Proposal. Well it basically is an essay by Jonathon Swift where he is suggest a way of ending poverty and famine in Ireland in 1729. He suggested that the Irish start selling their 1 year old babies to English families as a delicacy. Yes. He suggested the English eat poor Irish babies. This is a satire, so basically he was being a dick.
Anyway. I didn't make this post to explain the Modest Proposal. No. I did this to explain how this boy and I decided to be a dick as well.
We had to work in groups today in class and read it. Well one of my group members came late to class and missed the whole explanation of how the writing was a satire. So said girl thought it was real. She threw a fit. It didn't help that the boy in my group and myself were telling her it was real and that the English really ate poor Irish babies back then. She refused to read the paper. She even raged at the teacher until my teacher explained that it wasn't real.
I honestly don't understand how she didn't realize it wasn't real. The writing was very sarcastic. That was also the highlight of my day because of how funny her reaction was.
The Modest Proposal is the weirdest shit ever
And I read fanfic like its my job so thats really saying something
Okay, disclaimer: I indirectly know the guys in this band, The Modest Proposal. (they're from around where I grew up and friends of friends.) I looked them up on spotify on a whim the other day, and was pleasantly surprised to see their album, which I quite enjoy. I know this video (of a live outdoor concert) is pretty subpar, but they're a lot of fun to see perform, and they're super nice guys. Also this song gets stuck in my head easily.
