Hello esteemed followers!
As you will remember, we had a Halloween Quiz, if you got all 15 questions correct, we offered a prize: a drabble with the prompt of your choice! 6 people came back and made a request with the special password, we will NOT be taking additional drabble requests to our Owl Post – these are gifts to those few who got a perfect score from our Quiz. We hope to post the others soon!
Prompt: James leaving little “presents” (like small things with meaning) for Lily as an Advent’s Calendar. She could find out something big if she put the pieces together for @lastflyinggrayson
(*Note: I did the 12 Days of Christmas because I didn’t want for it to get too long...well long-er. It also strayed a little away from Christmas but...you’ll see. I hope you like it!)
Day 1
The first item was a rose.
A yellow rose, not red. Red was a sharp, contrasting bite in the muted grays of winter. On trees, in stores, among decorations—the color was everywhere. Yellows were few and far between.
“Oh,” said Lily as she found the flower in the simple glass vase on the table, “This is...out of season.”
“Read the card,” whispered a voice behind her.
She glanced at the table where there was, indeed, a small card positioned neatly next to the vase.
“Someone got into Remus’ chocolate stash I see,” she noted as she took stock of the fingerprints on the paper’s corners, “Couldn’t wait twelve more days until Christmas, James?”
“Just read it.”
She snorted and flipped open the card:
Evans-
A rose by any other name would be a lily. Happy day 1 of 12.
-Your True Love
“Shakespeare, huh? I didn’t know you were into muggle literature.”
James laughed as she spun around to kiss him on the cheek, “Blame Remus.”
Day 2
On the second day, Lily discovered where the fingerprints had come from.
“You ate half of it!” she exclaimed, holding up the chocolate bar with clear bite marks in it, “I swear, you’re worse than Sirius—”
“Sirius hates milk chocolate.”
“That’s not the point!” she shook her head, but it was hard to play the disapproving act so close to Christmas.
“One day, Potter,” she vowed, but she found that it was impossible to hide her smile, “One day I’ll—”
“You’ll what?” James asked, snagging the chocolate from her hands and taking a bite from it.
“James!”
He swallowed and beamed at her with chocolate stained teeth, “Oh, I know!” an envelope pressed into her hand, “You’ll read this!”
My Sweet-
Roses are red,
Violets are blue,
I ate half the chocolate,
But I still love you.
-Blame Remus
Day 3
On day three, it was a record player.
“Where did you find this?” she asked, smiling as she realized that it was almost identical to the one that she had had as a child.
James winked and the record began to spin, “A man has his ways.”
“Sirius helped, didn’t he?”
“I have no idea where you got that ridiculous idea.”
“I think the Led Zeppelin gives it away.”
Lily-
No music is as sweet as your voice when laugh and talk about the things you love (but please stop singing in the shower).
-James
Day 4
On the fourth day, it was a blanket.
Ms. Evans-
Because I never want you to be cold
-Mr. Potter
Day 5
Day five was a key:
L-
A key to my heart
-J
“This unlocks our front door, idiot.”
Day 6
Day six was a bit of deja vu.
“Another rose?” Lily asked as she approached the table that morning, “Running out of ideas are we, Potter?”
He sniffed, “You try giving someone a different gift every day!”
She smiled, “Sap. You’re making it too complicated. Just kiss me next time or something.”
Evans-
A rose by any other name would be a...lily. This is harder than I thought it would be.
-Potter
Day 7
He gave her a kiss.
L.E.-
I took your advice.
-J.P.
Day 8
“A...potato?”
“You like potatoes!”
“Well yeah,” Lily scrunched her nose as the cold, unpeeled vegetable in her hand, “but I usually prefer them cooked.”
“I don’t have time for that.”
She rolled her eyes, “You could literally make soup with magic in like, what, six minutes?”
“Six minutes!” he snatched the potato out of her hands, “Good cooking takes time. You don’t deserve this.”
Lily watched with wide eyes as her boyfriend stormed off into the kitchen, returning an hour later with skewed glasses a single bowl of soup.
“I appreciate cooking,” he told her before looking her dead in the eyes and drinking the entire bowl.
Lily-
This is dumb, you can’t even cook. Do girls like raw potatoes? Peter does, but he’s...Peter. Oh well, plant a potato tree or something.
-James
Day 9
On day nine, he gave her a Golden Snitch.
It flew away almost as soon as she opened the box (she had never possessed good reflexes, and her height didn’t help), and it took them a good forty-five minutes to track it down, but it was the thought that counted.
Lily-
You’re a Keeper!
-Prongs
Day 10
Day ten was a journal that only opened if she tapped the top right corner three times with her wand.
My Lady-
For your thoughts and dreams. A bit of privacy in this maddening world.
-A Kindly Gentleman
Day 11
“Just the letter?”
“Just the letter.”
Evans-
I love you. There are probably thousands of ways to say it with more eloquence than that, but...I’m not that skilled with words.
-Potter
Lily smiled as she put the letter down, “I love you too, James.”
Day 12
On the last day, she found a vase with eleven roses and a card propped against its side.
Potter-
Marry me?
-James
For a long moment, she stared at that card. She glanced up, at the window where Christmas snow was falling, left to where the lights on the tree twinkled like stars. She looked back to the card in her hand and those four simple words.
When she turned around, she found him on one knee, a ring and rose held carefully before her.
He cocked an eyebrow as her gaze met hers, “Well? What do you—”
He didn’t finish the sentence.
He didn’t finish because Lily’s lips met his and he drew her closer with a smile. Didn’t finish because when she broke away, she smelled like cinnamon and the dinner she had burnt a few hours earlier. Didn’t finish, because her eyes glistened like those tree lights, like the stars. Didn’t finish because:
“Yes,” she whispered as she broke away, “Of course.”
He smiled, “Merry Christmas, Lily.”
“Merry Christmas, James.”
I strayed a little from the prompt, but I hope you liked it!
-Jinxy
