Kiz: Instead of the school fight song, when the Kentucky Wildcats take the floor at the NCAA Tournament, the band should strike up “Sweet Georgia Brown.” The Wildcats are the Globetrotters. And the rest of the tourney field is the hapless Washington Generals. Right? Call the whole thing off. Crown the Cats? Not so fast.

Student Athletes, the NCAA, a union and money
There's a lot of talk about paying student athletes right now between, Northwestern's football team unionizing and Shabazz Napier talking about going hungry at college because he can't always afford to buy food. But I think there are some things getting lost in this discussion.
The first is that the decision to for Northwestern's football team to try and unionize is about more than getting payed. They want medical insurance and, due process for alleged NCAA violations, and fully funded scholarships. (Probably ones that the NCAA can't take away for things administration does.)
The second thing is that this is about the NCAA not about individual schools. You will notice that those demands are on the NCAA not Northwestern. It's the NCAA's rule that says college athletes can't hold a job. And while the NCAA makes a profit on college sports, most colleges in the NCAA do not. In 2012 "only 23 schools had athletic departments that brought in more money than they spent." 83% of FIU's athletic department's budget comes from student fees. If the athletes do get payed it's not going to come from the schools.
Final I think one of the things that gets lost the most in this discussion is that the NCAA's policies don't just affect Division I football and basketball. The rules are the same for every single student athlete in a school that is a member of the NCAA. Not a single one of these students is allowed to get a job or make money using their name and image. That means there are many more student athletes like Shabazz Napier who can't always afford to buy food that are never going to be in a position where that will make the news.
Personally I don't think student athletes should be payed in addition to getting scholarships for playing sports in college. But they should not have to sign away everything in order to play sports in college. All student athletes deserve the things Northwestern's football players want and none of them should ever have to go hungry because the NCAA won't let them find a way to get money for food. The NCAA owes them at least that much.
A Yahoo! report released on Thursday links Oregon payments to two men associated with Oregon recruits. The payments were made as part of a scouting service and the Ducks have stated they were within the NCAA rules.
