Curious because my school made me read these and most of my family aren't familiar with the majority of them, nor are my friends.
Which of these books did your school require you to read?
The Green Book
The Pigman
The Shadow Club
Jade Green
Island Of The Blue Dolphins
None of these
More than one of these (list in the tags please)
All of these
anytime I think about The Pigman by Paul Zindel I have to cry because “What did she want from me—to tell the truth all the time? To run around saying it did matter to me that I live in a world where you can grow old and be alone and have to get down on your hands and knees and beg for friends? A place where people just sort of forget about you because you get a little old and your mind's a bit senile or silly?”
Did anybody else have to read a book called “Mr Pigs” or something like that (IDR the name but it was a YA novel from like the 70s) in a Jr High English class? Because Ive read Hogg, Ive read The End Of Alice, Ive read all the big bads but nothing has ever matched the absolute hopelessness of “Mr Pigs” still pops into my head and haunts me sometimes with how fucked up and sad it was. I have literally never read a story so depressing. Im trying to find it now but IDR the title so nothing is coming up but it was about two kids who befriend an old mentally ill man who collects glass pigs or his dead wife collected them or something like that, and the kids throw a party at his house and the pigs get ruined, and then to make it up to him they take him to the zoo to see his favorite monkey only to learn that the monkey died and he has a heart attack and dies on the spot.
EDIT: The Novel is “The Pigman” by Paul Zindel
more books coming in!
oh to be a teenage girl in the 60s and smooch your con artist best friend while you’re both wearing the clothes of your shared estranged father figure and his deceased wife
‘Be yourself! Be individualistic!' he called out after me. 'But for God's sake get your hair cut. You look like an oddball.’
