The pilot is the perfect soft reboot. Bill is an instantly loveable new companion, an intelligent and imaginative girl who doesn't go to university but still attends the Doctor's lectures and when she doesn't understand something, she doesn't frown. She smiles. She's even lesbian. Her new personal tutor is an old man who plays guitar in his office, you're introduced to the Doctor through her eyes in the span of several days with old sonic screwdrivers on his desk, a photo of Susan Foreman, a police box that's way too big to have gotten through his door, and his reflection appearing in an ancient photo of Bill's mother that just showed up one day. His big happy smile when she can't understand how the TARDIS doors are impenetrable, when he tells her she's safe here and she always will be. I've been a whovian since adolescence but the pilot makes me feel like I'm seeing it for the very first time.

bill asking twelve why he noticed her out of all the people who come to his lectures who aren’t supposed to and it cutting to the photo of susan on his desk as he says “most people, when they don’t understand something, they frown. you smile” he chose her bc she reminded him of his granddaughter and her curiosity and joy!! twelve said I WILL adopt you immediately!! I’m gonna cry!!
