What's that anime you've reblogged recently it looks interesting
I’m going to assume you’re talking about My Hero Academia, which is a great show you should totally watch!
The basic premise is that almost everyone in society has what they call a “quirk” (basically a super power, which is why my tags for it are super power kids and super hero kids). Midoriya, the main character, is quirkless, which gets him a lot of grief, especially from his ex-childhood best friend, Bakugou. All Midoriya wants to do is become a hero, like his idol, All Might (All Might is the #1 super hero- I can’t remember if it’s in the world or just in Japan) but all anyone ever tells him is that he should give up on that dream.
Even All Might, when he meets him, let’s him down.
Until Midoriya performs an act of heroism, in front of everyone, which ends up inspiring All Might.
As thanks, All Might trains Midoriya and eventually gives him his own quirk, One for All. The series evolves from there with Midoriya going to the most prestigious school in Japan, UA, and learning to control One for All.
Honestly, what I really love about it is all the characters because they are what drives the series. Each character could be a main character in themselves and the creator does a great job exploring them (even if I wish he would focus on the girls more, like he does such a great job setting them up to be their own thing and then never follows through).
You have characters like the entire Class 1-A (the class Midoriya gets into), who (thanks to Midoriya, All Might, and Bakugou) become the center of attention and must prove themselves in order to live up to the hype. Literally, one of my favorite things about Midoriya and Bakugou is that it’s pointed out again and again that they drive the rest of the class to do better, which makes the class themselves amazing.
Then there’s characters outside of the class, like Class 1-B and Shinso, who have to deal with being compared to Class 1-A and what it means to be in a society that only values you based on what your quirk is.
You also have the villains, all who have a unique personality. What I really find interesting is that we see the villains grow as much as the heroes. Shigaraki, the main villain, is portrayed as a spoiled brat in the beginning who really doesn’t have a motivation other than wanting to beat All Might just because (and that’s not just my interpretation, Midoriya and Shigaraki have a conversation about why Midoriya treats Shigaraki different from this other villain Shigaraki was competing against). But as the series goes on, Shigaraki starts to come in on his own.
Even the teachers are great and have their own growth (there’s a reason Dadzawia is a popular headcanon, this man literally went from “I expelled an entire class last year and I won’t hesitate to do the same again” to “Talk shit about my children, get hit”). All Might, who is also a teacher, has his own emotional arcs, growing right alongside Midoriya. And the other teachers don’t feel like carbon copies of each other. They have their own personalities (which is the biggest compliment I can give to the series. No two characters seem the same).
What I’m getting at is that the series is driven by the characters and that’s what makes it enjoyable. Honestly, the plot is so-so to me (it gets better along the way but Season 1 was very forgettable until you get till the Attack on USJ. I blame the fact that it had to follow the shounen protagonist formula to get up on its feet- nothing against that type of plot but it’s just been done so much that it’s very meh to me).
Anyways, I would definitely give it a try! It has become my new obsession right now.
