Pon Update
Whiskey is an asshole. He lunged nicely but wanted to spook at everything today. EVERYTHING. This resulted in him snapping a lead and breaking the snap on my lunge line. Thanks, Whiskey. Fuck you too. Lunge lines aren't cheap. I reluctantly made the decision to have the farrier out to do his feet. They're HORRIBLE and need done asap but there's no way in hell I can work on them at all, let alone safely. Barely got one foot picked out when he spooked the second time and nearly took out my left knee, dragged the round pen panels inward a good ten feet, and broke the lunge line snap. I mean, hell, I use quick release knots because that's just common sense but this horse flings his whole body back. Not up. Back. And with such excessive force that it only takes one jerk to break a metal snap. There was no time to even think of undoing the knot. Only after all this do I find out that this horse has made an art of breaking anything and everything he's been tied to. Wtf. Meanwhile Sam was standing tied on the other side of the round pen dozing through this whole mess. Bless him. He got off easy today with a detangled braided tail, picked feet, thrush treatment, and no work because I was entirely too frustrated. Bless that fuzzy pon. I'm still gonna work with Whiskey, just won't tie him up until I've got a tree or a railroad tie or something that won't move. And a lead he can't just snap. And lots of treats for calm behavior. And short tying sessions. The only thing I can think of is to make him like being tied so much that it doesn't occur to him to try to break away. Ended things on a good note though by working on good manners and not mugging me for treats. Did some free lunging to the left but had to put him on the line because he's so stiff to the right that if he has his way he just won't go. Went fine after that though. *flops on the floor and dies*
