The Profession
I have always loved English, and since I did not know what to do after graduating High School, I enrolled in an English Degree. My goal was always to study in an English speaking country such as New-Zealand, Hawaii or Australia but I did not have the money. So in 2017, I settle for the University Of French Polynesia. I mean it is not that bad, with an average of thirty degrees temperature all year around, the beach ten minutes away from the University...
At that time, I did not know what I wanted to be, I used to say that I wanted to be an English teacher, it was easier than saying that I did not know yet. But now, two years later, I really want to be an English teacher, but not in the classic educational system ( meaning middle school and high school), I want to be an English teacher in an International English school meaning teaching English as a second language.
I made a clear plan of what I need to do and the degree and certifications I need in order to reach my goal.
First step is to earn a Bachelor’s degree, preferably in English, Writing or Education. It is said that a bachelor’s degree is the minimum educational requirement for a professional English as a Second Language teacher.
The second step is to obtain an ESL Training. It can also be a certificate program in teaching English to speakers of other languages (TESOL in short). In the program you will learn the basic skills to become an ESL teacher. After graduating, I will probably travel to New-Zealand and get my training there as I love this country. My love for English came from my trips there when I was a teenager, I used to study in an International English School approximately six weeks during summer holidays.
The third step is to get licensed, because even though I will not teach in my country’s high schools or middle schools, I still need to get a license, but it varies from country to country or states to states. I will probably think about it when I get the trainings and certificates needed.
My goals are to travel around the world, to discover new cultures, to meet new people and to learn everyday so I figured that this job would help me reach my goals. Moreover, I’ve always wanted to inspire people, especially the youth since they are the futur. I have always thought that teachers can have a powerful impact on their students, so why not do the best to inspire them to be good people who can make a positive change in the world and to live their life to the fullest.
Wish me luck on my journey because I know that it will not be as easy as it sounds because life is made of unexpected things.
And I wish you good luck in whatever you decide to undertake and hope it will realize your dream.
Xoxo
