Song Review: Trent Wagler, Eric Brubaker and the Rainpickers - “Past the Breaks”
When a new song comes out sounding like an old song, it sometimes pays to make more new versions.
The Steel Wheels are taking that tack with “Past the Breaks,” adding a performance by the band’s Trent Wagler on guitar and fiddler/composer Eric Brubaker joined by the Rainpickers to go alongside the previously released Sideways and extended iterations.
With two fiddles and cello on this go around, the instrumental has a slightly different feel while retaining all of its old-time, melancholic charm. This is a lo-fidelity take, captured in a living room rather than a studio, which suits “Past the Breaks” just fine.
