Riosian Bestiary: Sea Fury

Another twisted creature of Deeptide Shrine, the Sea Fury is what happens when a Sea Nymph goes wrong...

These fast scamps usually show up in groups of 3 or 4, and team up to chow down on unsuspecting prey. The stingray is not a hood and does not come off, so yes, the unblinking eyes up top belong to the Sea Fury. They do get a kick out of turning human cooing into terrified screams though.

Of the four playables, Jerdani and Ayu are the only two with access to an action called “Severance.” It gives them the ability to “sever” Wayward spirits from their poisoned, corrupted bodies, and so grants spirits another lease on life. Jerdani therefore sees it as a humanitarian tool for her journey.

However, Severance is associated with Rios’s patron goddess: a being whose name has been lost to Riosian history, yet her perceived menace lingers over the land like a dormant plague. Riosians only remember this goddess as that of Chaos, and believe that invoking her power will summon calamitous ruin to the land.

A haphazard Severance can easily go awry, and depending on the condition of the target, may kill it instead. For this reason, Jerdani refuses to use Severance unless she can see no other way to salvage her target.

Ayu, on the other hand, will almost never use this ability, except in one special case...

I’ve... never really seen the results of my own digital work like this. Yes, there’s always room for improvement. Yes, I might even go back later to change the icons, but for now...

I’m pretty proud of myself.

New Style? New Style!

I looked up some pixel tutorials and tried my hand a bit. I definitely like this style more than the paint-y one before. Sadly, that does mean I have to redo Ayu’s sprite, but I’m already working on it.

The sprites in the tavern here are all placeholders. At least, I’m hoping to design my own sprites, since each area of the game has its own culture that’s not reflected by the stock sprites. Kind of. So even if I don’t do my tilesets, at least I have the sprites and characters to call my own.

Riosian Key: Father’s Reports

Let’s talk a little bit about Rodrick Maxwell.

Mainly because it’s his fault that I paused writing the main story. Reports can’t write themselves, y’know?

He’s an elite mage of the Miyako Council of Mages, and holds an influential position among his colleagues. The Council knows Rodrick has a tendency to disappear periodically, then reappear again with a new research report to publish.

Jerdani didn’t inherit her father’s magical propensity, but she knows the nature of his work well enough that she can identify Rodrick’s work just from his writing alone.

Fortunately for her, Rodrick’s published work is so prolific that she may find his reports in a variety of locations across Rios. Do they contain clues regarding Rodrick’s disappearance? 

You’ll have to find them to see.

And who knows? You might uncover an interesting secret if you find them all...

I’m starting to see the appeal of the XP character sprites.

Time for me to fess up. With the end of A Drop Echoes, came the burnout. 

Even thinking about writing Sunset Stars makes me sick to my stomach.

I do want to start posting Sunset Stars before the end of summer, but I’m not about to force myself either. So in the meantime, to keep my creativity gears going, I’ve been working on the project at my other blog. An RPG!

By far the most time-consuming thing will be making the assets for the characters, as well as figuring out how to get vanilla RPG Maker VX Ace to look decently good.
