I have an old pal who's friends with the author of this book and thought I'd enjoy it, so he sent me a copy, and I have to say, it was a terrific read.
For nearly two decades, aside from being in bands, author JD Decosta was general manager of The Roxy Club on the Sunset Strip in Los Angeles (still owned by the Adler Family, I believe). I was a little hesitant at first, as that whole thing was never my scene, but I started reading it and couldn't put it down (and it was cool to see that one of Decosta's old bands did play with The Adolescents once).
You probably think the guy saw it all. Well, he pretty much did, and he's got the stories to prove it!
From having a heart-to-heart with Chris Cornell, to seeing many a meltdown (Adele and Marilyn Manson are but two), to seeing big bands/artists crammed into (the small) Roxy like Brian Wilson, Prince, and the Sex Pistols, to name but a few.
Decosta has a unique way of weaving these stories together, and Backstage Pass is at times totally hilarious, shocking, touching, and incredibly sad.
It was cool hearing all of the stories from Decosta's unique vantage point (and it sounds like he has the patience of a saint dealing with all of those personalities). This book is well worth your hard-earned money.
