Most of the time I only pick a playlist I actually listen to but I'm going to shuffle my entire collection so I'll probably get a lot I don't actually listen to.

A bummer of a first song. Follow up to their self titled album and it was a huge disappointment as an album. Then fast forward and both musicians turned out to be huge disappointments as people. I can't really listen to anything from Max Bemis or Chris Conley now, sometimes for nostalgia's sake I may but I will not give them my support.

A pretty fun album. If I remember correctly the drummer is also the lead singer. I've really only listened to this album by them. This song has a good opening two lines: "I've got a heart, but it's afraid to love. Sometimes I think the damn thing's full of rust."

I'm going to be completely honest, I don't remember this song and I only vaguely remember this album. I grew up listening to whatever my parents would put on at the lake or in the car so I am more familiar with their album Fight Songs.

This is not my favorite song by this band but it's alright. The band has some really great songs like Headphones, Save Me and Wasted.

I am not overly familiar with this song but I do remember enjoying it. It's definitely part of that MySpace/OG Warped Tour era. The Sleeping actually came back a few years ago and released a really great album called I Feel Like I'm Becoming A Ghost. I believe a lot of people would be most familiar with their song Don't Hold Back from the game Guitar Hero.

The Sleeping - Questions & Answers

Post-hardcore is a genre that I don’t listen to very often, and I don’t have a lot of it in my collection, but I’ve been getting more into it lately. It started by picking up some stuff from At The Drive In, Glassjaw, and Thrice, and that’s led me wanting to hear more. I used to Thrice and Glassjaw back in the day, but a lot of other bands are totally new. There are a ton of bands from this scene that are completely new to me, despite maybe hearing their name here and there. One of those bands is The Sleeping, and their second album, 2006’s Questions & Answers. I had kind of heard of these guys, but they’re a band that I’m not super familiar with, so when I saw this album online, I was curious to check it out.

After spending a week with it, I like this album, but it’s not perfect. I like a lot of stuff here, such as the band’s overall sound and their vocals, but they’re not amazing. This is one of those albums I like, but I’m not super crazy about it, either. It’s still good; and I’m glad I have it in the collection, because it’s got some cool stuff on it. The band’s sound is a heavier version of post-hardcore; they aren’t quite metalcore, but there are some cool metal riffs here. The album has a more progressive feel, too, since not every song has the same formula. It’s really cool, and the closing track on this album is almost nine minutes long, and it’s this huge epic song that isn’t afraid to get strange.

It’s kind of refreshing, because a lot of post-hardcore from this time really sounded the same. This album is a bit more unique, at least in their sound. I like their vocalist, too, but he reminds me a lot of Adam Lazarra from Taking Back Sunday. This band is almost what would happen if TBS were strictly a post-hardcore band with some metal riffage. This is a solid little album, even though it does lean a little too long. It clocks in at 53 minutes, which is partially why I haven’t gone back to this as much, but it’s an album that I like every time I listen to it. It’s not one of my favorite albums in the collection, but I still quite enjoy it, especially for what it is. This band isn’t super well known, but they should be.

We are Greg and Annie. You may have seen us around trying to spread some good vibes into the world. It’s a hard life but we try to add value in everything we do. To anyone who gives us a follow, we’d like to offer some cool and unique posts. Greg wants to start by sharing about his collection of concert and event memorabilia—a different item every post, chosen by me (Annie). I’m really excited because I love watching people talk about things that they have loved.

Today, I chose a little spiral-bound booklet for the first object. It’s covered in doodles and cutouts in the kind of collage I would have made back in 2006. It’s an unofficial guide to Vans Warped Tour ‘06, sponsored by Circuit City (with a coupon for CDs in the back!)

Greg pored over the book front, back, and at random spots inside, trying to conjure his specific memory of this Warped Tour. (The helpful page labeled “Write it down, punk! (Or you might forget it!)” is peacefully blank.)

He’s been to so many music events in the past, and his memory isn’t always that great for recalling things that long past. But I see his eyes and face get more animated as the names and images in the book start adding up.

It was August 9, at Virginia Beach, VA. This was the last time in 4 years Greg would attend Warped Tour, and unlike usual, he was collecting some freebie souvenirs (like this booklet). (In fact, he ended up with two goodie bags of free schlock by accident.)

One of the bands on the cover, Aiden, has autographed their featured page inside. They answered the last interview question, “The best thing about the internet is:”, with “MySpace, duh!”

Another band’s page has autographs, too: The Sleeping. Suddenly Greg is connected to the past as a specific memory comes through. “We got to go back and get high and hang out,” he says. “Well, no, back where the tour buses were…” He says the band hadn’t found any weed locally but Greg’s friend was able to supply.

(Later in completely unrelated circumstances, Greg ran into someone who knew The Sleeping or someone in it. Greg showed them a picture circa this era, and they remarked on the striking lack of tattoos on the lead singer back then.)

The last page, “autographs”, has a mysterious note only. Greg thinks it may be from when he got something else signed, but he might not have that thing anymore, as he likes to give things away. His intonation says that it isn’t the object that’s important but the experience of having lived things. The memory might be partial but the excitement and enjoyment are still tucked away in there. I can’t wait to see more of this in the next coming days.

More personally, Greg pulls a photo from an album to include in this post. It’s from 2004’s Warped Tour. “Mud Wrestling_0012”. Weirdly, the mud wrestling doesn’t pull my attention as much as the crowd walking past, because seeing them transports me to 2006 as surely as seeing old-model cars in photos from decades gone by.

Greg adds this note: “Do not mud wrestle at any event unless it is the end of the event. You will regret it. We had to wash off in the runoff from the water fountains. Safe, but not sanitary. We both lost: there were no winners that day.” He adds that a friend saw this mud wrestling match on Fuse!
