but it was Thaxton who dragged me kicking and screaming into Old Man Castle, so.

ok, so, watching it a couple more times, I'm noticing a few very pleasing things!

Cosette is no longer sharp (although she still struggles with the high notes). Yay!

the ensemble may be an utter mess during ODM but they're sounding better. Yay!

Colbourne is actually looking somewhat charismatic? his voice is still a bit thinner than I'd really like but he's projecting a lot more charisma than I expected (or he's improved in the last week). Double Yay!!

I have never, in my entire life, believed that the musical could ever, EVER actually get across the pain and pathos of the Javert Derailed chapter in the brick. I know we've talked about this before, but that chapter is the most painful part of the brick for me, so much more painful than the fall of the barricade, OFPD, Fantine's death, Valjean's death, any of it, because of how utterly broken Javert is, how lost and overwhelmed he is because the walls of his worldview have come down and the vistas thus revealed are too vast. I find it physically difficult to read. and the musical -- just, the limitations of the medium, how compressed everything has to be, how superficial. how can it ever communicate the pathos of Javert Derailed? how could that be possible, when you have thirty seconds of interaction between Valjean and Javert and then a two-minute song?

I love Earlvert but he doesn't make me clutch the brick to my chest and cry

I mean, I think Earl is a really, really good Javert but to me, at least, he is first and foremost a really really good MUSICAL!Javert. and there is nothing wrong with that! that's his job!! but he doesn't ping brick to me as strongly as some others. I love him and his Javert but he's not dragging me kicking and screaming into Old Man Castle.
