Hi thunderfam, it’s been a while =) Today I thought, why not talk a little bit about a theory concerning something we have barely discussed in the fandom: The Thundertwins joint power!
We all know Phoebe and Max did hold each other’s hand before (”Are You Afraid Of The Park?” on the roller coaster for example), so let’s look at how exactly it happened:
Max took Phoebe’s hand and not even half a second later:
Their twin power is already unlocked. It didn’t take a lot of concentration or a long time. They also immediately know how to use it, as if it was a part of them all along. The way they move to destroy Belfort’s controler resembles other scenes where they joined both their telekinetic blasts to e.g. lift a heavy object/ create a force field.
It’s clearly some kind of electromagnetic force field and a bit simliar to Electrice’s powers, which is something I was especially happy about =)))
Because it was unlocked so suddenly, Barb’s theory of their heavy emotions in this particular moment being the key seems very likely.
But there’s one other thing, a tiny little detail that could have something to do with it also:
All Thundermans are supposed to be powerless, because Belfort controls them via his microchips. Shortly before, he made use of Chloe’s teleportation power to imprison Max with his family.
Chloe’s power has something special about it. It’s the only power that can be transferred from her to another person BY TOUCH. She’s not creating a portal for someone else to walk through to teleport them, she’s giving the other person the power to teleport directly with her.
Normally, when Chloe teleports with more than one person, she’s in the middle and everyone else around her.
As everybody starts to hold hands, Max and Phoebe still stand apart from each other. Chloe can’t teleport anymore, because Belfort deactivated her power again...but did this deactivate her power transfer ability as well?
In this picture, everyone is already in contact, except for Max and Phoebe (even Chloe is like: guys, what are you waiting for???). And then:
To finally conclude: This is not the first time Max and Phoebe held hands, but it’s the first time they did while - even though over a bridge of several people- Chloe’s is also in touch with them. Could it not be that her ability to share her power, transferred to Barb Hank,Billy, Nora, finally to Phoebe and Max?
Once this connection was created, Phoebe and Max could use it on their own. The difference: while Chloe can hold someone’s hand and then decide to share her ability, Phoebe’s and Max’s twin power is now unlocked automatically when their palms touch. This could be a hint that this is not normal power transfer, but a unique bridge between them. And it was created right there.
Max & Phoebe’s first task in the Z-force’s final test
This was such a telling scene, because while Phoebe maybe has more knowledge when it comes to fighting and other superhero stuff, Max has a better notion when it comes to people. He immediately reminded his sister of how everyone is competition and NO ONE could be trusted. That’s clearly something he learned form Colosso!
Although as the room is filling with gas, Max first looks at Phoebe, non-verbally asking for her opinion first, before mentioning his own idea which he needs a moment to think of. Phoebe is quick and spontaneous and Max is a person who makes the plan. Same thing in Come What Mayhem. Same thing in Thunder In Paradise.
I point this out because I find it interesting that Max who is described (especially by Phoebe) as kind of irrational, turns out to be the most rational of all the Thundermans in the end. That really shows us that even in his evil phase, Max did most things for a reason. That no matter how crazy something seemed to his parents or siblings, he always had a motivation, a plan in his head.
When he was getting worse in season 3, that rational part was slowly getting weaker and his craving for just managing to be a real supervillain somehow, for just being appreciated somehow, his fear of being unloved...all that (guys, I get sad when I think about it, I swear, they hurt my boy so much) was taking control of him. There he was no longer as effective, but now, in this extremely dangerous situation, with Phoebe at his side, with his family behind him, he stayed completely calm and came up with a brilliant solution.
Max always had hero potential, he just wasn’t in the right environment. Phoebe finally gave him his security back (like she did in season 1) and it’s so amazing to witness. I was rooting so much for them in this scene and there was zero, ZERO rivalry between the Thundertwins - that alone is unheard of! YES!
This first task was also foreshadowing: Max told Phoebe, don’t trust anyone. He was against the alliance with Belfort and I believe not only because he underestimated his powers, but because he simply thought it wasn’t clever to trust someone with so much when they had effectively just met him. Max was also against taking Belfort home with them until Phoebe convinced him that it was the right thing to do.
Was it though? Yes, it was, because it’s very important for the story line, it was a kind gesture and essential for the reunion between Colosso and his son, but if Phoebe would have listened to Max here, their family would never have been put in the extreme danger as the Gamer wanted to take revenge on them.
Last, I want to point out how much better Max and Phoebe worked together, even without their twinpower!, than all the other teams. They communicated with looks, with gestures, they knew each other’s movement by heart.
CAN WE PLS TALK ABOUT THE PERFECTION THAT WAS THIS SCENE!?
I MEAN EVEN IF I WANTED TO -AND YOU GUYS KNOW ME- I COULDN’t HAVE WRITTEN SOMETHING MORE TRAGIC AND DRAMATIC !
JOEY SLAYED THIS. THEY ALL DID!
LIKE JUST THE WAY MAX IS COMING THROUGH THAT WINDOW AND NORMALLY- IN A NICK SHOW! -YOU WOULD THINK WELL THAT’S GOING TO END WELL; BUT THEN IT (AT FIRST) DOESN’T AND I WAS HOLDING MY BREATH.
AND SECOND, BELFORTS EMOTION IN THIS SCENE, ESPECIALLY THE WAY HE TALKS TO MAX AND COLOSSO WAS SOOOO AMAZING, PROPS TO THE WRITERS, THIS WILL BE REMEMBERED!
