Bleach AU: Visored Role Swap

AU in which the people sent to investigate during the Turn Back The Pendulum Arc change.

Kensei and Mashiro still go, because it is the job of the 9th division to investigate, but when the situation becomes too dangerous, Yamamoto chooses different people to come assist them. Hiyori is still sent after them, because they need the expertise of the Twelfth Division, but it is during the following meeting that things change.

It is still Ushoda Hachigen who follows, his talents in Kidou far too valuable.

Instead of Hirako Shinji, the one sent is Sasakibe Chojiro – because Yamamoto’s lieutenant is as strong as the younger captains, so there is no reason for the old man to worry. Shinji stays behind, keeping a watchful eye on his lieutenant – or so he thinks, because he doesn’t know Aizen enough to notice that the man hidden by an illusion isn’t Aizen at all.

Instead of Aikawa Love, Ukitake Juushiro is sent – he is old and strong, trusted by Yamamoto, and he worries about the younger Shinigami.

Instead of Otoribashi Rose, Shihoin Yoruichi is sent – fast and ready to investigate the scene, confident in her experience and abilities as Captain of the Second Division.

Instead of Lisa, it is Kuchiki Sojun who comes along, because he may be sick but he is still a lieutenant and he has been feeling so much better lately, going as far as accompanying his father to the meeting, and so Kuchiki Ginrei isn’t worried – at least not more than usual – when Sojun volunteers to go.

And so they leave, never to come back.

They do not escape Aizen’s experiments, and the Hollowfication begins though its victims are slightly different.

Urahara and Tessai save them, as Urahara still came to save his lieutenant, and are framed for a crime they didn’t commit.

But it is not Yoruichi who saves them from Central 46. A disguised Soi Fon, young but oh so fast and furious, desperate to know what happened to her Captain because while she greatly dislikes Kisuke (but not hate, not when there is no betrayal and feeling of having been left behind for another) she wants answers and he has them. With her Captain’s life in danger, she doesn’t hesitate to follow Urahara.

And so they escape to the Living World.

Kaname Tousen still becomes the Captain of the Ninth Division, content to wait for Aizen’s instructions.

Shiba Kaien is promoted, becoming Captain of the Thirteenth Division but never quite managing to find a good lieutenant, at least not one who truly has the strength it takes. And when Kaien dies (or maybe disappears, who knows in this AU), it doesn’t take long for Aizen, always so diligent and hard working, to become the new Captain of the Thirteenth Division.

With Yoruichi and Soi Fon both gone, the Second Division is left greatly weakened. It is a division traditionally led by the Shihōin Family, but Shihōin Yūshirō is meant to be the Head of the Clan and too young anyway – and so the Second Division stumbles a little, temporarily held together by some members of the Ōmaeda Family until they can find a better candidate. And then comes along Ichimaru Gin, young but a prodigy like they’ve never seen before, with his ever present grin and creepy demeanour, never betraying his thoughts and feelings – yes, Captain of the Second Division is a title that fits him perfectly.

Yamamoto names his third seat, Okikiba Genshirō, as his new lieutenant – but it is a heavy title to bear, and the name Sasakibe Chojiro haunts the First Division.

Needless to say, a lot of things change – and the battle of Karakura is even more emotionally charged than it would have been otherwise.

I will try to expand on this AU later on, but I’m curious to hear if anyone has ideas!

Chapter 365 - whose side are we on

Aizen vs Shinji - Tweaked

I just want to share a little scene from the final battle with Aizen, specifically the confrontation between Shinji and Aizen, that I tweaked a bit in my head. I need to share it. It’s not perfect, but it’s better than what we got, if only for the fact that Shinji shuts the fuck up.

Picture the scene:

The final battle is raging above Karakura Town. Amidst the chaos, Shinji and Aizen square off. The other Visored are too injured to fight, and watch desperately from the sidelines. Former Captain and Vice Captain maintain eye contact in silence.

Slowly, they begin to walk towards one another, drawing their blades. (This song begins to play in the background.)

As Shinji walks, his former self, superimposed onto his present self, gradually fades away. The same effect occurs with Aizen. The past fades away, leaving their present selves bare and ready for battle.

Shinji grins suddenly. "Somethin' smells nice!"

Aizen's eyes widen. It's too late. Unleashing his shinkai, Shinji begins his assault. Aizen is thrown, and for a short time he is at Shinji's mercy as his senses are distorted. However, he quickly figures out Sakanade's schtick, and counters. Shinji battles ably, keeping Aizen on the ropes despite the disadvantage. Aizen fears him for good reason.

Ichigo arrives on the scene. Shinji tells him to fuck off and let him handle this. He has one more trick up his sleeve.

The defeated Visored and Yamamoto know what he is about to do and shout for Shinji to stop. Aizen moves to do just that, but Shinji is prepared and he dodges.

"Fool!" roars Yamamoto. "I forbid it!"

Shinji only smiles. He has nothing left to lose but his life. The rest, Aizen had taken away - a long time ago.

Ignoring their cries, he raises his sword.

"Bankai."

I was planning to ask about it during te summer but I forgot, but better late than never xD So the question is: have you got any headcannons about Kisuke, Yoruichi, Tessai (and maybe also Visored) on the beach? I can see Yoruichi joking about Kisuke's skin colour that burn in the sun (I know from own expirence ;---;), and he just don't look like some one who likes sun, sand and the ocean.

I FEEL YOU, ANON; I, TOO, AM PALE AF.  Not as pale as Kisuke, but it’s still hella annoying to live in a country with an average of 300+ sunny days per year, where everyone gets all nice and bronzed by friggin’ June, while you have to go through the dreaded lobster phase ;-; I blame my mountain-dweller genes.

For actual, written beach shenanigans, I shall direct you here.  But aside from that, yes, I absolutely do have beach headcanons for the shōten crew.  And yes, Kisuke is totally the pasty dork who feels exposure to actual sunlight may fry him alive and only enjoys beach outings from a distance (under the shade, with a drink in hand)

Kisuke

Not a huge fan of swimming, but he does know how to swim.

Skinny dipping is an entirely different matter altogether Kidding aside, he does enjoy the sea itself, just not the whole experience with the scorching sun, the sand that gets everywhere, the noise etc, which is why he’s far more amenable to a swim in the afternoon, especially at dusk, when he can just float around in peace and think 

Lobster King; spends the first night after a beach outing having lotion and/or yoghurt plastered all over his back.  Redness eventually transitions into a decent-looking tan, wonder of all wonders

Always brings a book or a sudoku magazine, which he ends up solving in its entirety a few minutes in, then turns into a Literal 5-year-old whining about when they’re leaving.  Can be pacified via bribery (cold drinks and/or a show, i.e. Yoruichi engaged in some sort of beach game)

Gets trolled when he inevitably falls asleep on his beach chair; people write things on his back with sunscreen, leading to fairly embarrassing partial tanning.

Yoruichi

Tanning Queen, comfortable to keep on laying under the hot sun for hours

Loves beach games, especially rackets.  She may or may not have broken a few on Kisuke’s head over the years, and that number may or may not double when she’s playing with Hiyori.  There is also a frisbee incident We Do Not Speak Of. 

Keeper of the Snacks, ends up eating 73% of the lot

Is always the first one to make fun of Lobster King Kisuke, but she’s also the one who rubs lotion on his back when he gets burnt, chuckling the whole way through

Deliberately sends her ball hurtling at Kisuke and Shinji whenever she can, calling them Doddery Old Codgers who won’t get their asses off their beach chairs, sitting under the shade all day, judging everyone else (see below)

Tessai

Loves underwater activities, especially snorkeling

Don’t challenge him into a breath-holding contest, you will lose, and he will look majestic beating you

Always gets spectacle marks around his eyes and temples because he tans so easily.  Salty Lobster King always teases him for this (because he’s jealous), to which Tessai can only reply with a classy, subtle rebuttal that sends Kisuke sulking and wishing he were back in his Science Man Cave.

The Kids

Jinta is usually the one trolling Kisuke by writing insults on his back with sunscreen. Tessai and Shinji occasionally help, Hiyori films for posterity.

Jinta won’t admit it, but he loves building sandcastles and ~*ironically*~ helps Hacchi out when he’s around (see below) 

Ururu is very into beach games as well: she and Yūshirō have an ongoing beach volley competition they resume every year. 

Ururu loves seashells, she started a collection after Tessai fished out a gorgeous conch for her.  Even Jinta fawned over it, then tried to see if he could hear the sound of the sea off the cavity, which was when the conch-dweller made its presence known and freaked him out.  Ururu, completely unfazed, calmly stabbed it dead with her kanzashi hairpin, and hasn’t let Jinta live this down since 

Yūshirō has mad beach hair game.  Perfect beachy, gentle waves.  The girls (save Mashiro) all low-key hate him for this.

Cinnamon Roll Yūshirō, too good for this world, too pure, gets way too fascinated by jellyfish and is tricked into touching one by a totally innocent and well-meaning Ururu third parties (with credit to @mysteriousshopkeeper). After that painful first lesson, it takes some time for him to get into Jellyfish Fights**, but once he does, he dominates

(** Personal note: In Greece, this is totally A Thing during jellyfish season, at least where I’m from.  I’m talking about saucer jellies, those tiny, flat, transparent little harmless blobs that fit into your palm and secrete some sort of saliva that’s not painful at all, just gross xD  We call those mini jellyfish ‘little glasses,’ and back when I was a kid, Jellyfish Fights got brutal: you’d pelt the other kids with them as hard as you could, which felt at best like a gooey slap, and at worst had the jellyfish explode all over you, and you ended up having to clean jellyfish bits off your hair and fish them out of your swimsuit for hours afterward, lol.  Man, kids can be terrible)

The Visored

Shinji has a love/hate relationship with the beach.  He loves getting primped up for the occasion, picking out his best designer shades and swimsuit, but when he gets there, he’s way too concerned with maintaining his impeccable hair.  He often finds himself sitting in the shade with Kisuke, which clearly never ends well for either of them.

Hiyori spends inordinate amounts of energy trying to get Shinji to mess up his hair or spill stuff on his swimsuit.  It’s the highlight of the beach for her and she nearly always succeeds.  There is an unspoken, ongoing competition going on that only gets worse every year: as it stands now, Hiyori spends months planning her strategy, and Shinji has to take precautions of increasingly ridiculous proportions 

Hacchi makes the most beautiful, elaborate sandcastles (may or may not be maintaining structural integrity with Kidō)

Kensei is always up for any beach game, which prompts Mashiro to join in as well and ruin it for him by taunting him the whole way through

Kensei’s beach snack game is off the charts, but he ends up having to hide them every time Yoruichi is around

Love has to shoo Kisuke away when the latter has finished his book/sudoku and pleads Love for some reading material.  Which Love is usually very generous with, but Kisuke ends up ruining all manga for him when he goes into detailed tirades about the ‘unrealistic physics’ involved.  Love still doesn’t know if he does it on purpose or if he just doesn’t realize it, but he suspects it’s the former.

Lisa offers to share her porn erotica to remedy this, which both Kisuke and Love appreciated at first, but had to turn down when Hiyori smacked them both “THERE’S KIDS AROUND” for moral reasons.

Rose spends the whole day in anticipation of the afternoon bonfire, when he’ll get to whip out his guitar, but Mashiro and Kensei nearly always end up ruining it for them all when they get into a fight and they all leave the beach, sulking (but no-one as hard as Rose, dammit, he wrote a new song this time)
