Paul Muni for The World Changes, 1933
Remembering Paul Muni on his birthday, here with Jean Muir in THE WORLD CHANGES ('33)
Lyrics to a Song Never Released (The Old Games)
These streets once were etched in a name There’s so many cracks in the sidewalk of shame We’ll each point our fingers, but I’ll take all the blame And if you were to ask, I’d tell you every day’s always the same
Sure there’s memories in that back alley But don’t get attached, these things tend to fade What once was love has become crushing self-hate We overfilled it all, and it was always me to drop the plate Let’s play the old games Let’s play the old games Let’s play the old games Let’s play
I follow the ghosts of paths walked long ago It’s crazy to see how a city can grow It’s not the same town I used to know I’ve done it before, it’s not all that hard to go
I’ve got many stories from that place I won’t give it all, but I guarantee a taste Call it poetry, but we both know it’s waste Sorry to run, but you’ve got to pick up the pace Let’s play the old games let’s play the old games let’s play the old games let’s play
I tried to keep in touch I tried to keep you around But my failure was enough to bury me in the unforgiving ground I didn’t know I asked too much I’m hooked on the sound
I’ve lived and I have almost died I guess I should be grateful I’m alive When you left, I barely survived I barely survived,
I’ve been staring at my aging face see the youth behind it in a different place You held me like a basket; I held you like a case I should’ve just ran away let’s play the old games let’s play the old games let’s play the old games let’s play let’s play the old games let’s play the old games let’s play the old games Let’s play
My stylist and I were discussing how Mel Brooks is 99 this year and we’re hoping he already filmed his parts for the next Spaceballs movie… which got us talking about the earliest birthdate of anyone we’ve met. I thought it was my grandfather (born in 1915) but then I remembered I did meet my great grandmother once and she was born in 1894.
The world has changed a lot since 1894.
… She died in 1990, at the age of 96. My grandfather (other side of the family) died in 2017, two weeks from his 102nd birthday. I know all the actuarial tables max out at 100 but I’m preparing to live to 125 just in case it happens.
