'The Blacklist' Exclusive Clip: Something Stinks About That Prison…

It served as a fine stand-in for prison scenes in last season’s post-Super Bowl episode of The Blacklist, but the location that Red Reddington (James Spader) and his cohorts actually used for the set? It was a giant toilet.

Well, a giant sewage facility, actually, and in a bonus feature that’s included on The Blacklist: The Complete Second Season DVD set, series star Diego Klattenhoff says the New York sewage plant smelled exactly as you would expect it to.

“It was delicious,” Klattenhoff jokes in the clip above. “It was somewhere below freezing, and it was very windy. Nothing too bad; I’m from Nova Scotia, so stuff usually doesn’t bother me, but when you’re shooting with pigeons flying all over the place… they’re eating the remnants of feces, and the smell… it really added to it.”

Adds co-star Mozhan Marno, “Diego, for whatever reason, really thought that was hilarious, because we’d start the scene, and I’d be like, ‘Oh, my, God, I can’t breathe,’ and he’s like, just cracking up.”

Series production designer Nicholas Lundy has his own pun-y take on the sewage setting’s prison-friendly attributes. “I’m kinda fighting against the oil rig quality of it,” he says, “but once you get into the bowels of this place, there’s something kind of cool about it being a little clean and antiseptic.”

The Blacklist: The Complete Second Season is available on DVD and Blu-ray.
