Hey Zeplerfer! Just wanted to say that I've always been quite taken by your stories. They're so unique and enthralling :) I was just wondering, is your imagination really that creative to whip up these amazing fanfictions on the spot or is there some sort of secret place great writers such as yourself go to get ideas and prompts and such? I'm trying to be a better writer but I feel like I could never think of the stuff other people think of! And I hate being cliché!

There is no secret writer’s paradise for story ideas (at least, not that I’ve found), but I do generally get inspiration from outside stories. I’ve used movies, plays, children’s books, reality shows, historical events, pictures on tumblr, Iggycat’s ideas, the Olympics, and a sandwich as story ideas.
Once I have the germ of an idea, I spend some time thinking about how to make the story unique. It helps that I read so much fanfic because it gives me a good idea of what has and hasn’t been done before. It was only after I started reading Pottertalia stories that I realized that no one had switched up the houses. And in the Olympics stories I saw that it was always the same sports over and over again. You don’t need to pursue novelty for novelty’s sake, but changing a key aspect of the typical story might give you an insight into how to write a better story.
Also, try to think about the story from your character’s perspective. How would they react to plot events? The author picks the major driving force in the story, but the rest should flow naturally from how the characters act and react. Sometimes people react in cliched ways, and that’s okay.
Personally, I find that I’m at my most creative when I’m working within constraints. My goal of writing stories with titles for all of the letters of the alphabet helped me pick which stories I wanted to write. For example, I got the idea of doorman!Alfred from a picture, but his love of Knock, Knock jokes developed when I was thinking about how to get a ‘K’ story. (For those keeping track, I still have E and V left. Don’t worry, I have stories planned for both!)
Is there a certain genre of story you’ve been wanting to try that you’re holding back on for some reason? It’s always good to try new things. Because once you’ve written a story about a sandwich, literally everything else will seem much better by comparison ;)
