I haven’t finished that one yet, but I do ADORE it’s atmosphere and a lot that I’ve seen. Some of the in game character animation is a little wonky, like motion capture gone wrong (faces especially), but since some of the enemies are androids, it actually works with the creepiness factor.
Also Xenomorph. Mmm xenomorph. Great AI, the game is good at creating spaces you think are safe, then stealing it from you (vents vents vents).
I have a soft spot for games that focus on stealth, survival, and resource collection rather than a shoot out, which may be the root of my preference of Alien: Isolation over The Evil Within. I knew what I was getting with A:I, I feel kind of cheated by Evil Within. It was directed by the guy who created Resident Evil and Evil Within is PACKED with references and homages to the dying series through camera angles and a lot of the monsters. The low level monsters reminded me of Silent Hill: Downpour, and ANYTHING that reminds you of that disaster ain’t good. Bosses, especially a canine based one had Resident Evil written all over it.
My biggest gripe is that Evil Within was advertised as being able to spook me like an old Silent Hill game might have or Outlast, so I guess I’m just disappointed lol. You get this crazy cross bow that can paralyze and shock enemies and that’s cool, if not a little busted. But most of its ‘scariness’ came from using things CONSIDERED disturbing, like oodles of blood, spike rooms, body bags, wheel chairs, etc, which end up getting more an ‘Eeww..’ reaction than anything else.
THIS TURNED INTO AN EVIL WITHIN RANT but long story short, if you only have 60 bucks to spend on one game, I pick Alien: Isolation due to better atmosphere, imagery, ability tobe scary, and replayability. (You unlock a survival mode eventually which is simply a ‘see how long you can survive’ mode, and that’s just a fun way to enjoy the Gabe when you’re dive with it without having to play the WHOLE game again)
