The X Files #3.2 Paper Clip (1996)
After spending the summer reading countless amazing X-Files fics an idea for a story came to me on an evening walk and I decided to try my hand at it. I love these characters so much. It's my first attempt at writing so please be gentle 🙈

Chapter 1 - A day of firsts
The first time you see her is just a fleeting moment, if you had blinked in that same instance, you would’ve missed it. Your gaze wanders lazily over a sea of heads when suddenly your attention is captured by a flash of red hair weaving in and out of sight. You spot it flitting in and out of sight and you crane your head to try and spot the source of that flash, your curiosity piqued.
Then, the sea of heads parts and you see her, a tiny red-headed women greeting parents and children with sparkling blue eyes and a kind smile, directing them to their respective classrooms, clipboard in hand. You feel like the world has stopped rotating on its axis for a few seconds and you’re freeze-framed, wide eyed, staring in wonder at the rainbow-colored skirt wearing vision in front of you.
The world spins into motion again when you’re startled out of your reverie by someone tugging on your hand and a stern voice exclaims: “Daa-ad, didn’t they tell you it’s rude to stare at strangers?”.
You look down at your son’s upturned face and have to smile at the sight of your 6-year old boy wearing his finest suit with a clip-on tie.
“Sorry son, got distracted for a second. You ready?”.
At his curt nod you give his hand a reassuring squeeze and you wonder briefly who is more nervous on this day, him or you. You step up to another clipboard-holding teacher whose nametag reads Alexandra Spencer – third grade.
“Hi! This is Felix William Mulder and I’m his father, Fox – we’re in first grade… well he is, not me, I’m not…”. You inwardly cringe as you stumble across your words, smiling sheepishly at the tall brunette who crouches down to Felix’s eye level, fastening a nametag to the front of his suit.
“Hi Felix, it’s great to meet you! You look really handsome today, are you excited for the first day of school?”. Suddenly shy, the first-grader looks down shuffling his feet in his uncomfortable dress shoes and only manages a tentative “Hi!”.
Dawn straightens up again and points out one of her colleagues in the crowd. “There’s your teacher, Sarah Anderson, and you can go right in, your classroom is in room 104, down the hall to your right! Good luck on your first day!”.
Disappointment comes in many shapes and forms and for you, today, it’s the glimpse of a blonde ponytail as you steer your son towards room 104.
You don’t see Miss Rainbow again on your way in.
