the age of miracles : book review

this book has been on my shelf for some time. i think i ordered it from a magazine. although, i wish i hadn’t.

i was excited to begin reading this novel: the blurb suggesting romance, and me being on my travels for holiday. i imagined it would be the perfect romance-filled read for by the pool.

oh how i was wrong.

the majority of the book talks - in first person recount - of how the world is ending. the global issues, and national warnings, and government coverups. in the book, the earth’s turning is coming to a slow and the world is, in simple terms... going to shit. it sort of worried me at how real the situation could be for us (yes me and u reading this) very soon.

anyway, i was hugely disappointed to have read 250 pages out of 360 before the two supposed ‘love interests’ even spoke to one another !! from the blurb as a whole, i was convinced that two teens would fall into everlasting love during this inconspicuous time of crisis. but no :(

in all honesty, there was certain extracts of family issues and friends but not enough compared to the constant blab of environmental issues.

the ending was even worse than the let down of there being a minuscule amount of love in the first place. i !! was more heartbroken than the characters at the end, and not in a good ‘oh yes that book destroyed me in the best way possible’ type of way.

overall, i’m sad to say that it was a complete let down ! and i’m also ashamed to say that i wish i’d have spent my time reading a different book.

The Age of Miralces

The Age of Miracles was written by Karen Thompson Walker and published in 2012. It takes place in modern day California, and is written in first person from the perspective of Julia. The most controversial subject in this book is that of the environment and climate change, but it is not controversial enough to really cause a big uproar. NPR said that “The Age of Miracles is a pensive page-turner that meditates on loss and the fragility of both our planetary and personal ecosystems.” And generally other critics agree that it was good.

There is a decent size following for a book that was released so recently. The most common quote to see from the book is “How much sweeter life would be if it all happened in reverse, if, after decades of disappointments, you finally arrived at an age when you had conceded nothing, when everything was possible.” Which, although it is good, is not the most memorable in my opinion. The quote that spoke the most to me was “‘The only thing you have to do in this life is die,’ said Mrs. Pinsky. ‘everything else is a choice.’”

I would teach this book in a class. Climate change has become a very relevant topic and it will be even more so to the next generation. The Age of Miracles is well spoken on the topic of the environment and also does a good job of touching on topics relevant in teen’s lives. I think it has the potential to be popular for a long time.
