The Long And The Tall Of It: Chapter 2
Sasha stuck close to the shadows as she sidled along the alley. She was risking everything for this meeting, but she couldn't bring herself to stay away. She froze as a truck rumbled past on the street, but relaxed slightly when it did not stop.
A clicking noise made her wheel around, paws almost tangling together in her haste. She sniffed the complex smells of the alley, and sighed in relief. He had arrived.
"Sasha, you came," Rex Fuzzington whispered into the dark. They circled each other in a joyful greeting, sniffing each other. Sasha had to bend her head almost to the ground, but it was worth it. Nothing in the world smelled so good as her beloved Rex. He wiggled and jumped, bracing his front paws on the side of her leg so he could smell her better.
It was hard, sometimes, being only ten inches tall. Especially when your beloved was almost two feet taller.
"Rex, my dearest, I have missed you so," Sasha said. "But I have terrible news. My regiment has been called to muster, I must report in the morning."
Rex dropped to the ground, stunned. "I thought there would be more time."
"So, did I, but it seems this war is moving faster than anyone foresaw." She sat next to him, pressed as tight as she could to his side.
"Will you promise to be safe?" he asked, looking far up into her soulful brown eyes.
"You know I cannot promise that. But I will try, for you." She lay down on the damp alleyway pavement with a sigh. He curled up tightly under her chin. They did not move until the sky lightened in the east.
