1. This is 500 pages. Why is that relevant? I'll tell you in a bit. 2. It is mostly interesting. 3. Zafon's first book is better-The Shadow of The Wind. Much much better. 4. So my expectations were higher. And maybe this is why I didn't enjoy this as much as I did the first book. Fantasy mystery/ Modern Gothic- place the book where you want. The narrative is fast-paced, the characters are very interesting the setting is spot-on and yet, I almost faltered around page 300. I couldn't even understand why. Could it be that there was no relief from all that darkness and despair? Or that the ending seemed sloppy. Nothing should ever tie up so neatly in the end. Not even in fiction. Or my reasons for a damp aftermath wrt the book could be that I hate to drag books into the next week. And this one took some time to finish because of ... life and stuff. The bigger the book, the sooner i expect to finish it. Because mostly I don't trust myself to stay committed for a longer length of time. The best part about 'The Angel's Game'? Lucia Graves- the translator. She is the daughter of Robert Graves- the writer of 'I, Claudius'- another great historical fiction book. I gave it 4 🌟 on Goodreads. Reading this in itself is a great experience. Compared to ' The Shadow of The Wind'- a bit less. Maybe lesser still. #moderngothic #readingchallenge2022 #marchreads #carlosruizzafon #theangelsgame (at Delhi, India) https://www.instagram.com/p/CbFX9luL0ku/?utm_medium=tumblr

“On the contrary. Nothing makes us believe more than fear, the certainty of being threatened. When we feel like victims, all our actions and beliefs are legitimised, however questionable they may be. Our opponents, or simply our neighbours, stop sharing common ground with us and become our enemies. We stop being aggressors and become defenders. The envy, greed or resentment that motivates us becomes sanctified, because we tell ourselves we are acting in self defence. Evil, menace those are always the preserve of the other. The first stop towards believing passionately is fear. Fear of losing our identity, our life, our status or our beliefs. Fear is the gunpowder and hatred is the fuse. Dogma, the final ingredient, is only a lighted match” - Carlos Ruiz Zafon, The Angel’s Game, p284
